Elevated δ15N Linked to Inhibited Nitrification Coupled to Ammonia Volatilization in Sediments of Shallow Alkaline‐Hypersaline Lakes

open access: yesGeobiology, Volume 23, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
ABSTRACT Alkaline lakes are among the most bioproductive aquatic ecosystems on Earth. The factors that ultimately limit productivity in these systems can vary, but nitrogen (N) cycling in particular has been shown to be adversely affected by high salinity, evidently due to the inhibition of nitrifying bacteria (i.e., those that convert ammonic species ...

Artemia Cyst Production in Solar Earthen Ponds in Vinh Chau, Vietnam, and Its Associated Microbiome

open access: yesAquaculture Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Artemia franciscana farmed in Vinh Chau, Vietnam, have been known for their premium‐quality cysts. This study provides an update on Artemia cyst production in solar earthen ponds in Vinh Chau and explores the microbiome of Artemia gut, pond water, and pond sediment in order to generate clues for research on cyst productivity improvement.

Psychroflexus saliphilus sp. nov., isolated from a marine solar saltern

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2016
A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped, orange-pigmented strain, WDS4A13T, was isolated from a marine solar saltern in Weihai, China. Strain WDS4A13T grew under optimal conditions of pH 7.0-8.0, 33 °C and with 6 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WDS4A13T belonged to the genus Psychroflexus ...

Psychroflexus salinarum sp. nov., isolated from a marine solar saltern [PDF]

open access: yesINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SYSTEMATIC AND EVOLUTIONARY MICROBIOLOGY, 2009
A Gram-negative, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterial strain, ISL-14(T), was isolated from a marine solar saltern of the Yellow Sea, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by a polyphasic study. Strain ISL-14(T) grew optimally at pH 7.0-8.0, 30 degrees C and in the presence of approximately 2 % (w/v) NaCl.

Commercialization of Algae‐Based Biofuels: The Case of Ghana

open access: yesInternational Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Microalgae are a promising renewable energy source due to their rapid growth, high nutritional value, and minimal competition with food production. The study evaluates the feasibility of large‐scale algae‐based biofuel production in Ghana, contributing to the global shift toward sustainable energy.

Brumimicrobium salinarum sp. nov., isolated from a marine solar saltern

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2018
A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped and orange-coloured strain, designated LHR20T, was isolated from a marine solar saltern. The novel strain LHR20T was able to grow at 15-40 °C (optimum 33-37 °C), at pH 6.5-9.5 (optimum pH 7.5-8.0) and with 2.0-11.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 4.0-5.0 %).

Isolation and characterization of a novel methanogen Methanosarcina hadiensis sp. nov. from subsurface Boom Clay pore water

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 12, December 2024.
We isolated a novel methanogenic archaeon, Methanosarcina hadiensis sp. nov. (TD41E1‐1), from Boom Clay pore water at a depth of 225 m. It exhibits unique characteristics compared to previously characterized Methanosarcina species, such as the inability to perform acetoclastic methanogenesis and the presence of extensive surface appendages.

Coraliomargarita sinensis sp. nov., isolated from a marine solar saltern

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2019
A Gram-stain negative, spherical, obligately aerobic bacterium, designated strain WN38T, was isolated from a marine solar saltern on the coast of Weihai, China. Optimal growth occurred at 33 °C, pH 7.0-7.5 and in the presence of 3-4 % (w/v) NaCl. The genome of strain WN38T was found to contain the genes necessary for arsenate reductase and related ...
