Solar thermal collectors are used to heat up a fluid, generally water or a mixture of glycol and water depending of the configuration of the solar thermal system. They are adopted for many applications in both industrial and residential sectors. Many typologies exist in order to comply with heterogeneous needs. All have a common operating principle: to

The solar collector is the main component of a solar system. It transforms radiant energy from the sun, in the spectral range 0. 3 – 3μm, into usable heat (Fig. 1). The density of fluxes involved is low, at a maximum of the order of 1 kW/m2 (1000 times less than in the case of nuclear reactors). Heat losses depend essentially on temperature levels.

The Sun’s spectrum on Earth is modified by the atmosphere, and is harvested either by generating heat for direct use or for running heat engines, or by quantum absorption in solar cells, to be discussed later. Focusing of sunlight requires tracking of the Sun and is defeated on cloudy days.

Man is known to be the only animal that uses energy. Several centuries ago he fully depended upon the energy of his muscles and the energy that he received from the sun. With the discovery of fire he started using wood as the source of energy. He also knew that trees, besides giving wood for burning provide cool shade, timber for building shelters ...
