Reconstruction of solar UV irradiance

Advances in Space Research, 2005
Abstract Understanding solar influence on the Earth’s climate requires a reconstruction of solar irradiance for the pre-satellite period. Considerable advances have been made in modelling the irradiance variations at wavelengths longer than 200 nm. At shorter wavelengths, however, the LTE approximation usually taken in such models fails, which makes ...

Solar UV irradiation and dermal photoaging

Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology, 2001
The skin is increasingly exposed to ambient UV-irradiation thus increasing risks for photooxidative damage with long-term detrimental effects like photoaging, characterized by wrinkles, loss of skin tone and resilience. Photoaged skin displays alterations in the cellular component and extracellular matrix with accumulation of disorganized elastin and ...

UV solar reflecting coronagraph

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1990
A dual‐channel reflecting coronagraph is proposed that would provide observations of Lα corona and chromosphere, upper transition‐region phenomena in CIV, and also helioseismology observations in the continuum around 166 nm. Each channel would use a 104×104‐UV‐sensitive CCD array.

Treatment innovation using solar/UV

2023
Since ancient times, sunlight irradiation has been widely used for water purification. Apart from solar water disinfection techniques, UV irradiation is of particular interest when considering the photodegradation of various classes of emerging pollutants. Pharmaceutically active compounds are one of the largest classes of micropollutants.

Traceability of solar UV measurements using the Qasume reference spectroradiometer.

Applied Optics, 2016
One major objective of the European Joint Research Project "Traceability for surface spectral solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation" was to reduce the uncertainty of spectral UV measurements.

Epidermal UV-A absorbance and whole-leaf flavonoid composition in pea respond more to solar blue light than to solar UV radiation.

Plant, Cell and Environment, 2015
Plants synthesize phenolic compounds in response to certain environmental signals or stresses. One large group of phenolics, flavonoids, is considered particularly responsive to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Revealing Hidden UV Instabilities in Organic Solar Cells by Correlating Device and Material Stability

Advanced Energy Materials, 2019
With state‐of‐the‐art organic solar cells (OSCs) surpassing 16% efficiency, stability becomes critical for commercialization. In this work, the power of using photoluminescence (PL) measurements on plain films is demonstrated, as well as high‐performance

Influence of Clouds on Solar UV

2004
In 1801 Johann Ritter discovered non-ionizing, electromagnetic, ultraviolet (UV) radiation (Diffey, 1982) and the effect of clouds on solar UV radiation has been studied as early as the 1930s (e.g. Buttner, 1938), with the most recently published work based on 2 years of continuous UV measurements in Germany (Schwander et al., 2002).

New UV detectors for solar observations

SPIE Proceedings, 2003
BOLD (Blind to the Optical Light Detectors) is an international initiative dedicated to the development of novel imaging detectors for UV solar observations. It relies on the properties of wide bandgap materials (in particular diamond and Al-Ga-nitrides).

Global Solar UV Index

Radiation Protection Dosimetry, 2000
Excessive solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure produces a significant burden of disease to the skin, eyes and immune system. Effective programmes for the reduction of UV exposure are needed to reduce this disease burden and the associated health care costs.
