The Mother’s Day Solar Storm of 11 May 2024 and Its Effect on Earth’s Radiation Belts

open access: yesUniverse
The month of May 2024 was characterized by solar energetic particles events directed towards the Earth, especially the big event causing a strong terrestrial geomagnetic storm during the night from 10 to 11 May 2024, with auroras observed everywhere in ...

Can the Solar Wind be Driven by Magnetic Reconnection in the Sun's Magnetic Carpet? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The physical processes that heat the solar corona and accelerate the solar wind remain unknown after many years of study. Some have suggested that the wind is driven by waves and turbulence in open magnetic flux tubes, and others have suggested that ...

Electricity Generation From Ambient Water Evaporation in the Absence of Sunlight via PVA‐Based Porous Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this article, a water‐evaporation driven energy harvester is devised that works even in the absence of sunlight. This is achieved by combining PVA hydrogel with thermoelectrics (TEG) to directly capture energy from water evaporation. Under mild conditions (RH 40%, T of 26 °C, and 2.8 m s−1 wind), 1.71 mW (1.02 W m−2) power can be generated, >3 fold ...

Impact of solar radiation variation on the optimal tilted angle for fixed grid-connected PV array—case study in Beijing

open access: yesGlobal Energy Interconnection, 2018
A key design parameter for fixed grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) arrays, the optimal tilt angle, does not only depend on the geographic location but is also directly affected by atmospheric conditions.

Solar-Wind Origin

open access: yes, 2019
The Sun continuously expels a fraction of its own mass in the form of a steadily accelerating outflow of ionized gas called the “solar wind.” The solar wind is the extension of the Sun’s hot (million-degree Kelvin) outer atmosphere that is visible during solar eclipses as the bright and wispy corona.

Unique Performance Considerations for Printable Organic Semiconductor and Perovskite Radiation Detectors: Toward Consensus on Best Practice Evaluation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A lack of standard approaches for testing and reporting the performance of metal halide perovskites and organic semiconductor radiation detectors has resulted in inconsistent interpretation of performance parameters, impeding progress in the field. This Perspective recommends key metrics and experimental details, which are suggested for reporting in ...

Ferrocene Derivatives Enable Ultrasensitive Perovskite Photodetectors with Enhanced Reverse Bias Stability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Novel ferrocene derivatives (e.g., FcPhc2) are used as an ultrathin layer hole‐blocking layer, reducing hole injection from the Ag contact. This results in an ultralow noise spectral density of 1.2 × 10−14 A Hz−1/2, and a high specific detectivity of 8.1 × 1012 Jones at −0.5 V.

Characteristics of Solar Wind Density Depletions During Solar Cycles 23 and 24 [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2017
Solar wind density depletions are phenomena that solar wind density is rapidly decreased and keep the state. They are generally believed to be caused by the interplanetary (IP) shocks.
