Alignment of nematic liquid crystals on mixed Langmuir-Blodgett mono-layers

open access: yes, 1997
Mono-layers of stearic and behenic acids and mixtures of them in different proportions, deposited with the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, were used to study the alignment and the alignment dynamics in nematic liquid crystal cells. A relaxation process from

Polymorphism of the glass former ethanol confined in mesoporous silicon

open access: yes, 2010
X-ray diffraction patterns of ethanol confined in parallel-aligned channels of approx. 10 nm diameter and 50 micrometer length in mesoporous silicon have been recorded as a function of filling fraction, temperature and for varying cooling and heating ...

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.

History dependence of peak effect in CeRu$_2$ and V$_3$Si: an analogy with the random field Ising systems

open access: yes, 2000
We present results of transport measurements showing distinct path dependence of the electrical resistance in the superconducting vortex state of single crystal samples of CeRu$_2$ and V$_3$Si.

Bimetallic (NiFe) and Trimetallic (NiFeCr) Nanoalloys from Metal Oxides Using a Microwave Hydrogen Plasma

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Bimetallic (NiFe) and trimetallic (NiFeCr) nanoalloys (NAs) are synthesized using corresponding oxide mixtures using microwave hydrogen plasma within a few milliseconds. The process simultaneously 1) reduces metal oxides to metals; 2) downsizes the particles from micrometers to nanometers; and 3) blends the metals to form NAs.

Design and Simulation of Elastocaloric Refrigerator Based on Ni-Ti Plate

open access: yesZhileng xuebao, 2022
Elastocaloric cooling is based on the phase transition of elastocaloric materials and is driven by uniaxial stress. Elastocaloric cooling technology affords high theoretical refrigeration efficiency and does not result in greenhouse effects; hence, it ...

Domestic Applicability of Solid-State Cooling

open access: yesEmerging Minds Journal for Student Research
The global surge in energy consumption and the consequential environmental challenges have spurred an escalating demand for innovative, eco-friendly alternatives to current modern technology, and refrigeration systems are no different. With most households today owning a refrigerator amongst other appliances, there is a constant need for energy that is

Influence of Sample Preparation and Processing Procedures on the Thermal Diffusivity of MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.
