Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

The mechanics of solids in the plastically-deformable state [PDF]

open access: yes
The mechanics of continua, which is based on the general stress model of Cauchy, up to the present has almost exclusively been applied to liquid and solid elastic bodies.

Dynamic Precipitation during High‐Pressure Torsion of a Magnesium–Manganese Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An ultrafine‐grained alloy is produced by high‐pressure torsion of solutionized Mg–1.35 wt% Mn. Precipitation of nanometer‐scale Mn particles during deformation provides pinning sites. This prevents the formation of a bimodal grain structure and results in a finer grain size than for pure Mg.

A proposed generalized constitutive equation for nonlinear para-isotropic materials [PDF]

open access: yes
Finite element models of varying complexities were used to solve problems in solid mechanics. Particular emphasis was given to concrete which is nonisotropic at any level of deformation and is also nonlinear in terms of stress-strain ...

Solid-fluid dynamics of yield-stress fluids

open access: yes, 2014
On the example of two-phase continua experiencing stress induced solid-fluid phase transitions we explore the use of the Euler structure in the formulation of the governing equations.

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Thermal management of micro-scale inorganic light-emittng diodes on an orthotropic substrate for biointegrated applications

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The orthotropic material with the in-plane thermal conductivity much larger than the off-plane one can control the heat flow direction. This feature provides unique benefits in thermal management of micro-scale inorganic light-emitting diodes (μ-ILEDs ...

Impact of an asteroid or comet in the ocean and extinction of terrestrial life [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
Finite difference calculations describing the impact mechanics associated with a 10 to 30 km diameter silicate or water object impacting a 5 km deep ocean overlying a silicate solid planet demonstrate that from 12 to 15% of the bolide energy resides in ...
