Topological Point Defects in SmC* Liquid Crystals Under Mechanical Disturbance
Tangetial air jet shear inducess island formation and nucleates topological point defects in uniform SmC films. Island bounded by edge dislocation loops shrink and transform into isolated point defects under continued shear. Mechanical perturbatio provides a controllable route for defect engineering in smectric liquid crystal thin films.

Applications of Various Methods of Analysis to Combustion Instabilities in Solid Propellant Rockets [PDF]
Instabilities of motions in a combustion chamber are consequences of the coupled dynamics of combustion processes and of the flow in the chamber. The extreme complexities of the problem always require approximations of various sorts to make progress in

Numerical analysis of transient combustion response to acoustic oscillations in axisymmetric rocket motors [PDF]
A numerical analysis of unsteady motions in solid rocket motors with a nozzle has been conducted. The formulation treats the complete conservation equations for the gas phase and the one-dimensional equations in the radial direction for the condensed

Hierarchical Structure and Fabrication of Functionally Graded Biointerfaces in the Mussel Byssus
The byssus is a fibrous protein‐based holdfast consisting of mechanically distinct interfaces, which mussels use to anchor their soft living tissue to hard seashore surfaces. Here, multiscale methodologies were used to elucidate the compositional and structural features underlying these functionally graded interfaces and how they are fabricated through

A new fluorescent probe based on BODIPY for testing NO2 released from propellants
After long-term storage, solid propellants often exhibit various aging characteristics. This study presents a strategy for assessing the state of propellants using the Boron-dipyrrole Ni complex (BDP-Ni) as a probe.
