Stiffening solids with liquid inclusions
From bone and wood to concrete and carbon fibre, composites are ubiquitous natural and engineering materials. Eshelby's inclusion theory describes how macroscopic stress fields couple to isolated microscopic inclusions, allowing prediction of a composite'

Locally finite M-solid varieties of semigroups
For a semigroup term \(f(x,y)\) in the variables \(x\) and \(y\), let \(\sigma_f\) stand for the corresponding hypersubstitution. The authors prove that the largest \(M\)-solid semigroup variety \(V_M\) (where \(M\) is a monoid of hypersubstitutions) is locally finite if and only if \(M\) contains one of the hypersubstitutions \(\sigma_{xyx}\) or ...

Gates for the Kane Quantum Computer in the Presence of Dephasing [PDF]
In this paper we investigate the effect of dephasing on proposed quantum gates for the solid-state Kane quantum computing architecture. Using a simple model of the decoherence, we find that the typical error in a CNOT gate is $8.3 \times 10^{-5}$.

Structured environments in solid state systems: crossover from Gaussian to non-Gaussian behavior
The variety of noise sources typical of the solid state represents the main limitation toward the realization of controllable and reliable quantum nanocircuits, as those allowing quantum computation.

Samuel Zyman’s "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra": An Analytical Approach [PDF]
A professor at The Juilliard School since 1986, Zyman is one of Mexico’s foremost composers of today. His cello concerto (1990) exhibits solid technique, intense expression, and effective interaction between soloist and orchestra. The author demonstrates

All Solid Varieties of Semigroups
An identity \(u=v\) is said to be a hyperidentity in a variety \(\mathcal V\) if \(\mathcal V\) hypersatisfies \(u=v\) in the sense that whenever the operation symbols occurring in the terms \(u\) and \(v\) are replaced by any term (of the same type) of the appropriate arity, \(\mathcal V\) satisfies the resulting identity. A variety is called solid if

Henselian fields and solid 𝑘-varieties. II [PDF]
Let k be a real closed or Henselian field. A k-variety X (affine) is said to be solid if X is determined by its k points. It is shown that a k-variety is solid if and only if it contains a nonsingular k point. Another condition for solidity is given and a dimension theorem indicated.
