Are Solitary Internal Waves Solitons?

Studies in Applied Mathematics, 1998
Results of fully nonlinear numerical simulations of the interaction of two mode‐1 solitary internal waves, both propagating in the same direction, are presented. After the interaction, two solitary internal waves emerge. The large wave is slightly larger than the initial large solitary wave, while the small one is slightly smaller than the initial ...

Solitary waves in dispersive media

Il Nuovo Cimento B, 2004
The problem of solitary-wave propagation in composite elastic material is considered and solved. The linear equations, in the presence of a dispersive propagation law, give rise to nonlinear effects as the breaking-down of the wave into two modes propagating with different phase velocities.

On the Highest and Other Solitary Waves

SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1975
For solitary waves an expansion parameter which differs from those previously employed permits calculation to extremely high order. The observed behavior of the coefficients entering the power series for the position or velocity field yields much information about the nature of singularities in the solution.
