Optical soliton dynamics can cause extreme alteration of the temporal and spectral shape of a propagating light pulse. This occurs at up to kilowatt peak powers in glass-core optical fibres and at the gigawatt level in gas-filled microstructured hollow ...

Recect theoretical developments of the fiber-optic soliton are reviewed. New family members of the solitons are introduced, such as the coupled solitons, the paired solitons and the supersoliton. The practical application of the solitons are also reviewed. A new technology of the “solitonics” is expected.

In this chapter we describe the topic of cavity solitons in the framework of the general area of optical pattern formation. We illustrate how one can generate and control them; we compare them with standard spatial solitons and emphasize the special properties of their motion under the action of phase or amplitude gradients in the driving field.
