Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Recovery of ergosterol from Agaricus bisporus mushrooms via supercritical fluid extraction: A response surface methodology optimisation

open access: yesHeliyon
This work uses the response surface methodology to optimise ergosterol recovery from Agaricus bisporus mushrooms by supercritical fluid extraction. The influence of pressure, temperature, co-solvent use, and solvent-to-mushroom mass ratio was evaluated ...

On Solvent-Rich Recovery Processes

open access: yes, 2023
Current steam-based recovery processes such as Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) are very effective at recovering bitumen (extra heavy oil) from oil sands reservoirs but these recovery processes have significant emissions making bitumen among the most emission intensive oils globally.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Cyclic hot solvent injection: An advantageous injection method compared with mixture solvent in the solvent based heavy oil mining process

open access: yesInternational Journal of Coal Science & Technology
As a significant carbon-based fuel resource, heavy oil requires feasible oil extraction method to increase the production efficiency. Cyclic solvent injection (CSI) method is acknowledged as an effective heavy oil recovery method due to the relatively ...

The ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy as guardians of the cellular proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Perspective covers the three principles governing the crosstalk between the ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy in cellular proteostasis: (1) a shared ubiquitin code routing substrates via shuttle factors or autophagy receptors; (2) spatial compartmentalization into phase‐separated degradation hubs and organelle‐specific modules (exemplified
