Squeaky/Pain: Articulating the Felt Experience of Pain for Somaesthetic Interactions

open access: yesTemes de Disseny, 2022
This pictorial illustrates the methodological tools for articulating the felt experience of chronic pain used for designing somaesthetic interactions. To do this, it presents the design process of a case study named Squeaky/Pain, a soma extension aiming

Design of Incidence Matrices With Limited Constellation Expansion in Massive Connectivity NOMA Systems

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2023
Non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) is designed to transmit massive amounts of user communications. The incidence matrix manages the relationship between users and resources. This study focused on increasing user supportability and complexity reduction

Soma Design for NIME

open access: yes, 2020
Previous research on musical embodiment has reported that expert performers often regard their instruments as an extension of their body. Not every digital musical instrument seeks to create a close relationship between body and instrument, but even for the many that do, the design process often focuses heavily on technical and sonic factors, with ...

Suspended Circles: Soma Designing a Musical Instrument

open access: yesProceedings of the 2023 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2023
We present a soma design process of a digital musical instrument grounded in the designer's first-person perspective of practicing Dalcroze eurhythmics, a pedagogical approach to learning music through movement. Our goal is to design an instrument that invites musicians to experience music as movement.

Soma-Based Design Theory

open access: yesProceedings of the 2017 CHI Conference Extended Abstracts on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2017
Movement-based interaction design is increasingly popular, with application domains ranging from dance, sport, gaming to physical rehabilitation. In a workshop at CHI 2016, a set of prominent artists, game designers, and interaction designers embarked on a research journey to explore what we came to refer to as "aesthetics in soma-based design".

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Weaving Intelligence: Thermally Drawn Multimaterial Fibers Toward AI‐Enabled Smart Textiles

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Thermally drawn multimaterial fibers are rapidly advancing as intelligent structural units for next‐generation smart textiles. Integrating multimaterial architectures with neuromorphic and spiking‐neural‐network principles enables fabrics that can sense, compute, and adapt autonomously.
