Foodborne Viruses and Somatic Coliphages Occurrence in Fresh Produce at Retail from Northern Mexico
Food and Environmental VirologyFoodborne disease outbreaks linked to consumption of vegetables have been often attributed to human enteric viruses, such as Norovirus (NoV), Hepatitis A virus (HAV), and Rotavirus (RoV). Information about the occurrence of these viruses is scarce in many fresh-producing countries. Viral contamination detection of indicators, such as somatic coliphages,

A direct membrane filter method for enumerating somatic coliphages in drinking water.
Microbiologia (Madrid, Spain), 1995The application of a simple membrane filter method to enumerate specific somatic bacteriophages of Escherichia coli, using E. coli C as host strain, from drinking water samples was studied. The efficiency of the method using cellulosic membrane filters, samples pretreated with magnesium ions and Tween 80 added to agar medium-host cell lawns ranged from

Detection of Somatic and Male-Specific Coliphages in Fecally Contaminated Surface Waters
1996Somatic and male-specific (F+) coliphages are promising indicators of fecal contamination and human enteric viruses in water. There are various methods for the detection and assay of these coliphages, but they have not been adequately evaluated in comparative studies.

The potential use of specific somatic coliphage taxonomic groups as viral indicators on the basis of their persistence and prevalence in water was investigated. Representative type strains of the 4 major somatic coliphage taxonomic groups were seeded into environmental water and their survival was measured at temperatures of 23-25 and 4oC.
