IEE Colloquium `Recent Developments in Radar and Sonar Imaging Systems: What Next?', 1995
Many existing commercial sonar systems for sub-sea application are design specific with only one application or deployment mode employing a specific array configuration. The imaging concept moves away from the traditional beamsteering and multi-beam techniques by a digital focused beamforming operation (DFB) for pixel based imaging in any co-ordinate ...

Imaging sonar system and method
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1983An imaging sonar system is disclosed comprising a transmitter, a receiver, and a rotatable transducer coupled with the transmitter and receiver for generating sound waves and for detecting echoes therefrom. Drive means are provided for rotating the rotatable transducer.

Some image tools for sonar image processing
MTS/IEEE Oceans 2001. An Ocean Odyssey. Conference Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.01CH37295), 2002The trend in seafloor imaging towards using multiple sonar sensors with enhanced resolution has resulted in higher volume data sets. As a consequence, users need better, more efficient tools for data processing and interpretation. This paper describes three data processing tools useful for automating and accelerating sonar image formation.

Low-Complexity Adaptive Sonar Imaging
IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 2016We have studied the low-complexity adaptive (LCA) beamformer in active sonar imaging. LCA can be viewed as either a simplification of the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer, or as an adaptive extension to the delay-and-sum (DAS) beamformer.

In this thesis, a sonar mine detection system is presented. The three stages of the system, image enhancement, edge detection and data compression are analyzed. For each stage, different approaches are studied and the appropriate algorithm is chosen. For image enhancement, a cascaded morphological enhancement algorithm is developed.

Side-scan sonar image matching
IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 1998This paper presents a method for the matching of underwater images acquired with acoustic sensors. As a final objective, the system aims at matching data from two-dimensional scenes. The proposed approach carries out a hypothetical reasoning based on objects, represented by shadows and echoes in the sonar images, and their available features.

Segmentation of Multispectral Sonar Images
1995Acoustic images obtained from sonar may consist of multiple objects like undersea vehicles, ship wrecks, rocks, mines etc. Sometimes, strong echoes due to surface or bottom reverberation may also cause confusion in interpretation of such images. Such complex scenarios with multiple objects would first require segmentation of the acoustic image to ...

Range extraction from underwater Imaging Sonar data
2010 IEEE 15th Conference on Emerging Technologies & Factory Automation (ETFA 2010), 2010Nearly all advanced mobile robotic tasks require some knowledge of the robot location in the environment. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles are usually endowed with acoustic devices to perform localization, because underwater scenarios pose important limitations to light based sensors.
