A Method for the Interpretation of Sonar Data Recorded during Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Missions

open access: yesPolish Maritime Research, 2022
Image acquisition from autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) is useful for mapping objects on the seabed. However, there are few studies on the interpretation of data collected with side-scan sonar during autonomous underwater vehicle missions.

On Correlating Sonar Images

open access: yesRobotics: Science and Systems I, 2005
This paper demonstrates that sonar images correlate badly because target geometry and image fringes correlate in different coordinate systems. It is shown that if the receiver is a line array, all point objects have the same image in a coordinate system with axes of range and the sine of target bearing (the (r, s) coordinate system).

A Track Initiation Method Based on Multiple Accumulation of Active Sonar Images

open access: yes水下无人系统学报, 2023
To meet the requirements of autonomous detection of underwater moving targets in a strong reverberation background, a track initiation algorithm based on multiple accumulations of active sonar images was proposed to solve the problem of large amounts of ...

Manual scan imaging sonar

open access: yes, 2001
A manual scan sonar integrates multiple technologies into a compact and low cost single beam sonar having the ability to generate wide sector views comparable to that of much larger and more expensive multiple-beam sonar units. The manual scan sonar uses a piezoelectric transducer, orientation and motion sensors, a power preamplifier and amplifier, and

Breaking Wave Imaging Using Lidar and Sonar [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 2020
The two-phase flow generated by breaking ocean waves plays a crucial role in various geophysical processes, including dissipation of wave energy and atmospheric gas exchange. This paper presents a technique to measure the two-phase flow generated by breaking waves at prototype scale.

Side-Scan Sonar Image Classification Based on Style Transfer and Pre-Trained Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesElectronics, 2021
Side-scan sonar is widely used in underwater rescue and the detection of undersea targets, such as shipwrecks, aircraft crashes, etc. Automatic object classification plays an important role in the rescue process to reduce the workload of staff and ...

An Adaptive Image-stitching Algorithm for an Underwater Monitoring System

open access: yesInternational Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems, 2014
Against the narrow range of sonar images for underwater monitoring, an adaptive sonar image-stitching algorithm is proposed in this paper. Compared with conventional sonar image-stitching algorithms, this algorithm can be applied to stitch sonar images ...
