Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1968Abstract The practice of variolation in the Republic of Mali is reported for the first time. Variolation was studied among the Songhai of eastern Mali during a smallpox epidemic in 1967; it was performed with vesicular fluid for the sole purpose of preventing the disease. In one village 120 people were variolated, of whom 22 later contracted smallpox;
