WE have recently investigated the metabolism in man of sorbitol uniformly labelled with carbon-14. The results show clearly that sorbitol is rapidly and relatively completely metabolized to carbon dioxide in the normal and in the diabetic subject. Studies on the metabolism of sorbitol (labeled with carbon 14) indicate that it is rapidly oxidized when administered by the intraperitoneal route. When sorbitol is given orally a slower rate of oxidation is obtained because of a delayed intestinal absorption.

Evidence is presented for the simultaneous induction of sorbitol dehydrogenase along with fructokinase and repression of glucokinase by sorbitol in Aspergillus niger. Fructose is the first product of sorbitol catabolism.

Sorbitol Translocation in Apple

A report of glucose translocation, an apparent exception to the hypothesis that sucrose is the major carbohydrate translocated in plants, was investigated. Carbon-14 studies of the carbohydrates in the bark of apple suggest that rather than glucose the sugar alcohol, sorbitol, in addition to sucrose, is a principal compound translocated in this species.
