Experiments on the DCASE Challenge 2016: Acoustic Scene Classification and Sound Event Detection in Real Life Recording [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this paper we present our work on Task 1 Acoustic Scene Classi- fication and Task 3 Sound Event Detection in Real Life Recordings. Among our experiments we have low-level and high-level features, classifier optimization and other heuristics specific ...

Artificial Intelligence as the Next Visionary in Liquid Crystal Research

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The functions of AI in the research laboratory are becoming increasingly sophisticated, allowing the entire process of hypothesis formulation, material design, synthesis, experimental design, and reiterative testing to be automated. In our work, we conceive how the incorporation of AI in the laboratory environment will transform the role and ...

Frequency-Aware Convolution for Sound Event Detection

open access: yes
In sound event detection (SED), convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely employed to extract time-frequency (TF) patterns from spectrograms. However, the ability of CNNs to recognize different sound events is limited by their insensitivity to shifts of TF patterns along the frequency dimension, caused by translation equivariance. To address this

The Cuttlebone Blueprint for Multifunctional Metamaterials: Design Taxonomy, Functional Decoupling, and Future Horizons

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cuttlebone‐inspired metamaterials exploit a septum‐wall architecture to achieve excellent mechanical and functional properties. This review classifies existing designs into direct biomimetic, honeycomb‐type, and strut‐type architectures, summarizes governing design principles, and presents a decoupled design framework for interpreting multiphysical ...

Using Sequential Information in Polyphonic Sound Event Detection

open access: yes2018 16th International Workshop on Acoustic Signal Enhancement (IWAENC), 2018
To detect the class, and start and end times of sound events in real world recordings is a challenging task. Current computer systems often show relatively high frame-wise accuracy but low event-wise accuracy. In this paper, we attempted to merge the gap by explicitly including sequential information to improve the performance of a state-of-the-art ...

Knowledge Transfer from Weakly Labeled Audio using Convolutional Neural Network for Sound Events and Scenes

open access: yes, 2018
In this work we propose approaches to effectively transfer knowledge from weakly labeled web audio data. We first describe a convolutional neural network (CNN) based framework for sound event detection and classification using weakly labeled audio data ...

Shaping of Biohybrid Functional Living Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates a strategy for shaping living mycelium into functional materials by directing its natural growth. Nanoparticles armor hyphae, micron‐scale particles entangle within the network, and printed hydrogel architectures steer expansion, creating defined geometries.

Revealing the Hidden Role of Cd in p‐Type Mg3Sb2: Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance by Grain Boundary Segregation Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The hidden role of Cd segregation at grain boundaries is revealed in p‐type Mg3Sb2 by atom probe tomography and other advanced characterizations. Grain boundary Cd enrichment suppresses the SbMg+ hole‐killer formation and lowers potential barriers, enhancing electrical conductivity.
