Abstract Parallel tracking of distant relations between speech elements, so‐called nonadjacent dependencies (NADs), is crucial in language development but computationally demanding and acquired only in late preschool years. As processing of single NADs is facilitated when dependent elements are perceptually similar, we investigated how phonetic ...

Agreement between hearing thresholds measured in non-soundproof work environments and a soundproof booth [PDF]
Aims:To study the agreement between audiometric test results measured in non-soundproof environments at the worksite, and in a soundproof booth. Methods:In a cross sectional prevalence study on noise induced hearing loss, 885 transport workers whose hearing thresholds were measured by a standard audiometric test method in non-soundproof environments at ...

Abstract This study explores ways in which multilingual English listeners react to and rate three varieties of Asian English in three presentational modes: audio only, audiovisual and audiovisual with a face mask. Using a speech intelligibility framework, the study examines the extent to which presentational mode affects intelligibility and listener ...

Sound‐offset encoding is related to speech‐in‐noise perception at sentence level in older adults
Abstract figure legend Schematic summary of the study investigating sound‐onset and offset sensitivity in the brain of older adults. EEG responses to white‐noise bursts were recorded to examine neural encoding of sound onset and offset during passive listening and active task conditions.

Distinctive neurophysiological correlates of sound onset and offset perception in humans
Abstract figure legend Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings were obtained from participants listening to successive pairs of 1‐2 s noises in a silent background (Study 1) or successive pairs 1‐2 s silent gaps in a noise background (Study 2). Participants heard the same stimuli in the context of either a duration discrimination task (identifying ...

Noise‐induced reduction and early recovery of superior paraolivary nucleus sound‐offset responses
Abstract figure legend Acoustic over‐exposure transiently disrupts auditory temporal processing in mouse superior paraolivary nucleus neurons. In control conditions, neurons exhibit robust sound‐offset (OFF) responses, which are abolished immediately following noise trauma, indicating impaired temporal encoding.
