From soundscape documentation to soundscape composition

open access: yes, 2012
The World Soundscape Project (WSP) was established as an educational and research group at Simon Fraser University during the early 1970s and documented soundscapes in Canada and Europe as part of an over-arching concern to draw attention to the importance of the sonic environment.

Telecological Collapse: The Inevitability of Climate Breakdown in the Transmedial Podcast Drama Forest 404

open access: yesFuture Humanities, Volume 4, Issue 1, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper presents a close‐hearing analysis of Forest 404, a transmedial audio drama that was released to BBC Sounds in 2019. Despite the drama's eco‐dystopian critique of teleological ‘progress’ narratives (that enable and perpetuate the destruction of the natural world), I argue that the series ultimately propagates a sense of inevitability

Service Work as Lived Experience: A Problematizing Review

open access: yesHuman Resource Management, Volume 65, Issue 3, Page 731-748, May/June 2026.
ABSTRACT Between employee burnout and growing recruitment challenges, a systemic crisis confronts the service industry. One reason lies in the scope of received human resource management (HRM) approaches, which often emphasize organizational performance metrics at the expense of the emotional, social, and material experiences of doing frontline service

Mothers' Views and Experiences of Digital Maternal Presence Intervention and Skin‐to‐Skin Contact for Neonatal Pain Relief: A Qualitative Study

open access: yesNursing Open, Volume 13, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim To explore mothers' views and experiences on using digital maternal presence intervention (DMPI) and skin‐to‐skin contact (SSC) for pain relief in a neonatal intensive care unit. Design A qualitative descriptive study design. Methods Purposive sampling was used to recruit 25 mothers whose newborns were treated in a neonatal intensive care ...

Effect distances of road traffic noise on wildlife behaviour: A soundscape mapping approach using bird habitat selection

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 1141-1154, May 2026.
Abstract Road traffic noise is a pervasive environmental pollutant that negatively affects wildlife globally. Despite growing research, quantifying the spatial extent of noise impacts remains underdeveloped. Soundscape mapping from social sciences and engineering literature offers a useful yet rarely implemented tool to depict noise impact distances ...

Visioning ecologically diverse and harmonious futures of Korea in Good Anthropocene

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 1379-1402, May 2026.
Abstract The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a buffer between North and South Korea, holds profound historical, cultural and ecological significance, as well as exceptional potential for conservation and transformation. This study explores ecologically diverse and peaceful futures for the Korean Peninsula by envisioning the DMZ as a landscape for ...

Using Autonomous Recording Units to Detect Variation in Cicada Calling Pattern Across Urbanized and Green Spaces

open access: yesEcological Research, Volume 41, Issue 3, May 2026.
Conducted continuous acoustic monitoring of cicadas at six sites in Tokyo–Kanagawa over 61 days in summer 2024, detecting six species. Seasonal calling patterns were broadly consistent, but some species extended their calls into nighttime hours at urban sites.

Acoustic indices are not useful for biodiversity research

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 5, Page 1506-1518, May 2026.
Abstract Biodiversity assessment using passive acoustic monitoring has historically been challenging due to the limited availability of multi‐species acoustic detectors. In this context, acoustic indices were introduced as an alternative way to represent species diversity in acoustic datasets.

Ecoacoustics for context‐rich direct and indirect trophic interaction data and ecological network construction

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 5, Page 1489-1505, May 2026.
Abstract Understanding species interactions is critical for ecology and conservation, yet conventional network construction methods often lack spatiotemporal resolution and important contextual information. The growing field of ecoacoustics enables remote sensing across large spatiotemporal scales and the monitoring of otherwise cryptic communities ...
