Human activities disturb haul out and nursing behavior of Pacific harbor seals at Punta Banda Estuary, Mexico.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
Humans frequently interact with Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) at Punta Banda Estuary, Baja California, Mexico, due to the high incidence of recreational activities people undertake there.

ZeroWasteWater: short-cycling of wastewater resources for sustainable cities of the future [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Sewage treatment relies mainly on conventional activated sludge (CAS) systems, reaching sufficiently low pollutant effluent levels. Yet, CAS has a low cost-effectiveness and recovery potential and a high electricity demand and environmental footprint. By

Recovery process in sponges: morphogeneses and cell sources

open access: yes, 2019
Sponges (Porifera) represent one of the most ancient metazoan lineages. They possess unique anatomical and tissue structure, making them promising models for evolutionary studies. The high plasticity of sponge tissue and cells provide them with outstanding recovery abilities, ranging from wound healing to re-building of a functional body from ...

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

Tiger density, movements, and immigration outside of a tiger source site in Thailand

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, 2021
Landscape‐scale strategies for conserving wild tigers emphasize the role of core breeding populations (source sites) to replenish surrounding areas which have lost tigers.

Informed source separation: Underdetermined source signal recovery from an instantaneous stereo mixture [PDF]

open access: yes2011 IEEE Workshop on Applications of Signal Processing to Audio and Acoustics (WASPAA), 2011
The present paper exposes a new technique that aims at solving an ill-posed source separation problem encountered in stereo mixtures. The proposed method is realized in an encoder-decoder framework: On the encoder side, a set of spectral envelopes is extracted from the original tracks, which are known.

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

Effects of pork protein ingestion prior to and following performing the army combat fitness test: markers of performance

open access: yesJournal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition
Background Military personnel engaged in intense activities must consume enough quality protein in their diet to maintain protein balance and promote recovery.

Recovery of a Burkholderia thailandensis-like isolate from an Australian water source

open access: yesBMC Microbiology, 2008
Background Burkholderia thailandensis, a close relative of Burkholderia pseudomallei, has previously been reported only from Southeast Asia and North America. It is biochemically differentiated from B.

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.
