Identification of Source Rocks

1978
The derivation of petroleum from nonreservoir rocks is a well-established fact. Rocks that are, or may become, or have been able to generate petroleum are commonly called source rocks. The presence of insoluble organic matter (kerogen) is a primary requisite for an active or a potential source rock.

Rock-physics templates for clay-rich source rocks

GEOPHYSICS, 2015
Shale source rocks are composed of various minerals, mainly smectite and illite, depending on the burial depth, and they can be described as transversely isotropic media. The “pore space” may contain kerogen, water, oil, and gas determined by the in situ conditions.

Rock Mechanical Characterization of Unconventional Source Rocks

SPE Middle East Oil and Gas Show and Conference, 2019
Abstract Rock strength is an important property to measure for determining its effect on drilling, wellbore stability, and potential well completions associated with hydraulic fracturing of unconventional reservoirs. The industry traditionally relies on elastic moduli measured from core plugs to determine the stress anisotropy to predict

Porphyrins in Upper Jurassic source rocks and correlations with other source rock descriptors

Organic Geochemistry, 1996
The porphyrin content and composition in the extractable organic matter has been analysed in 13 Kimmeridge clay source rocks, spread from the north to the south of the Norwegian continental shelf. The samples are predominantly immature/early mature. The distribution of nickel and vanadyl porphyrins within the samples is markedly different.

Source-Rock Evaluation

1985
Much of modern petroleum geochemistry depends upon accurate assessment of the hydrocarbon-source capabilities of sedimentary rocks. Although the termsource rockis frequently used generically to describe fine-grained sedimentaiy rocks, that usage is a bit too broad and loose.

Source-Rock Evaluation Using the Rock-Eval Technique

2019
The basic pyrolysis techniques used for source-rock geochemical analysis are generally simple and can be interpreted in a straightforward way. However, some of the data generated can be misleading and lead to confused interpretations if not properly assessed. This chapter discusses the different aspects of source-rock evaluation using the commonly used

Relationship between petroleum reservoir rocks and source rocks

Journal of the International Association for Mathematical Geology, 1971
A substantial fraction of sandstones containing commercial quantities of oil are proposed to be in contact with source rocks which produce oil. For these situations the quantity of oil collected in a sandstone is proportional to the area of contact with a source rock of relatively low permeability, rather than to the total thickness of the potential ...

Mesozoic source rocks on Svalbard

1984
A review of the source rock potential of the Mesozoic formation on Svalbard is based on organic geochemical analyses of approximately 1000 samples collected during expeditions from 1976 to 1979. Regional and stratigraphic trends have been established for richness, quality and maturity of the potential hydrocarbon source rocks.

Various sources of wing rock

Journal of Aircraft, 1990
Limit cycle oscillations in roll of advanced aircraft can result from three different fluid mechanical flow processes. The so-called slender wing rock is caused by asymmetric vortex shedding from highly swept wing leading edges. A completely different flow mechanism causes wing rock for aircraft with moderately swept leading edges.

Elastic Properties of Source Rocks

Proceedings, 2010
Understanding how to relate the nanometer-scale phenomena and properties of source rocks and to their complex macroscopic properties is one of the current challenges in rock physics. This study shows a combined application of SEM, CLSM imaging and nanoindentation characterization, which provides the microscopic basis to analyze these macroscopically ...
