Environmental Problems of the South-Eastern Baltic Coast and the Curonian Lagoon
2002Environmental problems of the south-eastern Baltic are quite common for the rest of the Baltic Sea. The threat of oil spills increases with the increase in volume of oil transportation. The number of alien invasive species is growing, as is their impact on native ecosystems and local economy.

Harmful Algal Blooms in Coastal Waters of the South-Eastern Baltic Sea
2002Increased nutrient input results in an enhanced production of organic matter (eutrophication) especially in the river plumes of the Baltic Sea. Therefore, the open sea and the near-shore coastal waters are significantly different with regard to nutrient (N, P) and chlorophyll a concentrations, phytoplankton biomass and Secchi depth.
