Yet further CMP projections for the South African hake resource
2014This document addresses issues raised at and outstanding from the previous discussions of the hake OMP revision at the DWG meeting on 26 August, and concludes by listing issues still requiring choices/analyses to be able to finalise this OMP revision process at the next DWG meeting on 13 October.

Results of trials of candidate OMPs for the South African hake resource
2006The anticipated performance, in terms of catch and risk of resource depletion, of two candidate OMPs for the South African hake resources (each with three different resource recovery tunings) is evaluated. Both OMPs are empirically-based, given that this form of OMP has outperformed all production-model based approaches attempted to date.

Biology and fisheries of South African Cape hakes (M. capensis and M. paradoxus)
1995South African coastal waters are extremely productive because the west coast in particular is subjected to periodic seasonal, or in some instances almost all-year-round, wind-induced upwelling (Shannon, 1985; Lutje-harms and Meeuwis, 1987). It is this productivity of the Benguela system that primes the rich fishery for pelagic and demersal fish off the

Final set of candidate management procedures for the South African hake resource
2010This paper presents detailed results for the anticipated performances of six final Candidate Management Procedures (CMPs) for hake, both for the Reference Set of trials and for a wide range of robustness tests. The final choice amongst these six CMPs for the hake OMP to be recommended to provide TAC recommendations for 2011 to 2014 is to be made at the

Further candidate management procedures projections for the South African hake resource
2014This document reports further developments in the hake OMP revision process. First the requested 150 000t upper cap is placed on the TAC, and tunings to different average TACs over the next 10 years are contrasted, together with options for a prefixed TAC for the next two years.

Redistribution and sustainability : competing imperatives in the South African hake fishery
2015This paper focuses on the hake fishery and investigates to what extent the fishery has been transformed. It then discusses the institutional structure and incentive schemes in the fishery and evaluates the economic, social, and environmental impacts of quota redistribution.

2008 routine update of the South African hake resource baseline assessment
2008This paper presents a routine update of the South African hake assessment, including new commercial (catches and CPUE) and survey (abundance estimates) data. This update is for a “baseline” assessment, chosen to correspond to the scenario amongst the 2006 Reference Set which had the highest likelihood (M1-H1-C1-SR2).

Routine update of the 2008 baseline assessment for the South African hake resource
2009The 2008 “New Baseline” assessment for hake is updated to take account of further information that has become available over the past year. The update leads to only slight changes to results, which continue to manifest a lack of fit to catch-at-length distributions. The “New Reference Case” methodology (Rademeyer and Butterworth, 2009) , which resolves

Further candidate management procedure testing for the South African hake resource
2010This document provides a further progress report on the development of a revised Operational Management Procedure (OMP) for the South African hake resource. It follows on from Rademeyer and Butterworth (2010), and the discussion thereof recorded in the Aide Memoire of the DWG meeting held on 21-22 July, 2010 (FISHERIES/2010/JULY/SWG-DEM/35).
