Has fishing pressure caused a major shift in the distribution of South African Sardine?
2006No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.A major shift in the distribution of South African sardine (Sardinops sagax) has resulted in a significant mismatch in fishing effort versus fish abundance in recent years. The fishery for sardine started on the west coast during the 1940s, and processing capacity there increased ...

A Two Discrete Stock Hypothesis for South African Sardine Resource
2009The two discrete stock hypothesis for South African sardine has been extended. An improved fit to the data has been obtained. These results show that the hypothesis of two discrete stocks of sardine in South African waters can fit the observed data well.

Complex spatial structure and population richness are common in marine species and can provide regional stability in the context of localized environmental perturbation, ensuring long-term persistence. The most fisheries regulations are spatially uniform over broad-scale management units that reflect political, economic, and data collection convenience.

The acceptable level of risk for the South African sardine resource.
2019An acceptable maximum level of risk for the South African sardine resource has been calculated by comparing the depletion of the effective west component spawner biomass from the recent Operating Model being used to develop OMP-18 with the total spawner biomass from previous Operating Models used to develop earlier OMPs. This results in a risk level of

A 2-stock hypothesis for South African sardine: two discrete stocks
2009A 2-stock, 2-area hypothesis for the South African sardine resource is being developed, with the following boundaries: i) A “western” stock distributed throughout the “western area”, defined as the area west of Cape Agulhas ii) An “eastern” stock distributed throughout the “eastern area”, defined as the area east of Cape Agulhas As previously discussed
