Cotylar Fossa, Its Interpretation and Functionality. The Case from South American Native Ungulates

Ameghiniana, 2020
The cotylar fossa is a complex anatomical character in the astragalar medial malleolar facet. It represents a dynamic relationship between the astragalus and the tibia in the upper tarsal joint. The astragalus must accommodate the medial tibial malleolus when the tibia is in an extreme flexion.

An Eocene Bunodont South American Native Ungulate (Didolodontidae) from the Lumbrera Formation, Salta Province, Argentina

Ameghiniana, 2019
The extinct South American native ungulates are widely known as a particular evolutionary experiment of mammalian herbivory. Among their representatives, forms with bunodont dentition have received little attention, being usually regarded as primitive and placed in the paraphyletic order “Condylarthra”.

Bone diseases in a Pleistocene South American native ungulate species: the case of Toxodon platensis Owen, 1837 (Mammalia, Notoungulata, Toxodontidae)

Journal of Quaternary Science
ABSTRACTKnowledge of bone pathologies in South American native ungulates is very scarce, which contrasts with other groups of megamammals such as xenarthrans and proboscideans. In this paper, based on morphological and histological analysis, we describe different bone pathologies in two specimens of Toxodon platensis Owen (Notoungulata), one of the ...

Systematics of the South American Native Ungulates and the Neogene Evolution of Mammals from Northern South America

2018
South America was isolated from other continents during most of the Cenozoic and it was home of an endemic mammalian fauna. Among the most characteristic faunal elements are the South American native ungulates (SANUs), a group of ungulate-grade mammals that were widespread and highly diverse in the continent.
