Abstract This chapter examines the history of the Cold War in South Asia. It describes the position of South Asia in the Cold War, and investigates the reasons why Pakistan decided to side with the United States while India sought to avoid great power alliances and keep the Cold War at arm's length.

This one region encompassed the bulk of the landmasses, islands and maritime spaces which were affected by the seasonal monsoon winds.
