Patterns of Evolution of Frontal Systems Along the South-Southeastern Brazilian Coast
2018In this chapter, the meteorological characteristics of the South-Southeast Brazilian coast are analysed, in particular the frontal systems and their influence on ocean circulation and sea level. The analyses are based on meteorological fields (pressure, temperature and wind) and oceanic fields (ocean currents and sea level) calculated by the CFS-v2 ...

Abstract Holocene palaeoceanography and climatic reconstructions were evaluated based on proxy analyses of fish otoliths from shellmounds located along the coast of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Modern coastal seasonal upwelling is associated with the ascension of a deep and cold-water mass as a consequence of persistent NE winds that affect the ...

This work reports the results of a screening program based on marine sponge extracts from the southeastern Brazilian coast, covering cytotoxic and neurotoxic activities. Polar and non-polar extracts of 24 sponge species collected by scuba diving in rocky shores, from 1996 to 2000, were screened for haemolytic, cytotoxic and neurotoxic activities. Fifty-

In the present study, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were determined in 14 livers from specimens of the Brazilian sharpnose shark (Rhizoprionodon lalandii), which is an important economic resource for small-scale fisheries on the southeastern coast of Brazil. The following concentrations (lipid weight) of POPs were found: ∑PCBs: 1019±267 ng g(-1);

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate metals in muscles of two species of flatfish, using Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE). Specimens were caught monthly throughout the year 2005. Sampling was done at six points in the Santos Bay under different anthropogenic influences.

Intrusions of relatively cold and fertile South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) are a typical oceanographic phenomenon observed on the continental shelf off the southeastern Brazilian coast. Among the different factors that drive the SACW intrusions, one prominent mechanism is water transport driven by NE-E wind conditions.
