The Provenance of Silver in the Viking‐Age Hoard From Bedale, North Yorkshire
ABSTRACT The acquisition of silver was a key motive propelling the Viking expansion out of Scandinavia; identifying the sources of Viking silver during the early part of the Viking Age can provide critical insights into the relative significance of western European and eastern, Islamic wealth in the Viking expansion.

The historical regions of Europe: civilizational backgrounds and multiple routes to modernity [PDF]
A systematic typology or comparative analysis of European historical regions does not exist and there is relatively little literature on the topic. The argument in this paper is that a six-fold classification is needed to capture the diversity of Europe ...

We summarize the current state of knowledge on the age of the Middle Pleistocene ice advances into northern central Europe and provide 25 new single‐grain feldspar luminescence ages of Elsterian and Saalian glacigenic sediments to constrain the age of the ice advances and their tentative correlation with marine isotope stages/substages.

We present a 25‐stage reconstruction of the ice‐flow pattern evolution of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet based on mapping and analysis of ~240 000 subglacial lineations and lineation fields across Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of NW Russia. Our reconstruction uses a glacial geomorphological inversion approach, in which we generated 611 individual ...

Understanding the course and dynamics of ancient river systems, such as the pre‐Odra, provides valuable insights into the post‐glacial evolution of landscapes and riverine processes. The northwest‐trending pre‐Odra was an important drainage system of the European mainland into the Baltic Basin during and after the Scandinavian Ice Sheet retreat ...

Palaeowinds and depositional conditions from Holocene loess in Sweden and Finland
The nature of deglacial and Holocene wind regimes in Fennoscandia is debated, as is the degree to which wind‐blown loess deposits exist in the region. Loess deposits in Fennoscandia are often relatively thin, discontinuous and less well‐sorted than typical loess, and questions remain over the degree of their post‐depositional reworking and the impact ...

In 2001-2007 aerosols were measured in the coastal zone (11 campaigns) and over the open waters of the Gdańsk Basin (southern Baltic) (5 campaigns). The marine aerosols contained nitrogen and sulphur compounds, which increased their acidity.
