Health Risk of Bathing in Southern California Coastal Waters
Archives of Environmental & Occupational Health, 2008Urbanized areas often discharge large volumes of contaminated waste into coastal waters, which may pose a health risk to bathers at nearby beach areas. In this investigation the authors estimated the number of gastrointestinal and respiratory illness episodes associated with the microbial contamination of coastal waters among bathers at Southern ...

Beach attendance and bathing rates for Southern California beaches
Ocean & Coastal Management, 2007Abstract Annual beach attendance (BA) was collected for 75 beaches along the 350 km of coastline in Southern California for the years 2000–2004. On average, over 129 million beach visits occur each year, with the majority (54%) of visits occurring at only 15 beaches. Almost half of all visits (48%) occur on weekends.

The Bath-Tub Vortex in the Southern Hemisphere
Nature, 1965IT has long been thought that water draining from a tank would rotate counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere, provided other influences were kept small compared with the influence of the rotation of the Earth.

Hydrogen peroxide measurements in recreational marine bathing waters in Southern California, USA
Water Research, 2010Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) was measured in the surf zone at 13 bathing beaches in Southern California, USA. Summer dry season concentrations averaged 122 +/- 38 nM with beaches with tide pools having lower levels (50-90 nM). No significant differences were observed for ebb waters at a salt marsh outlet vs. a beach (179 +/- 20 vs.

In this paper we define seasonal and along-shore variations in suspended particle size distributions (PSDs) at two marine bathing beaches in southern California, using a low-angle light scattering instrument (LISST). Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis of the LISST data set (n = 55 651) identified three particle size modes that collectively ...

Despite Salmonella bacteria being important and wide-spread human pathogenic micro-organisms in coastal waters, they are not used as indicator organisms in the new EU bathing water directive 2006/7/EC. However, this does not exclude Salmonella as a potential threat in European bathing waters.

Abstract A section adjacent to a building structure at Shen Deli, Butrint, Southern Albania exposes what is believed to be the remains of a former Roman bath-house. This section shows a transition from the underlying natural marsh clay into an archaeological deposit, which is both the basal remains of a building structure, and what appears to be an ...

Hydrogen peroxide is photochemically produced in natural waters. It has been implicated in the oxidative-induced mortality of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), a microbial water quality measure. To assess levels and cycling of peroxide in beach waters monitored for FIB, diel studies were carried out in surf zone waters in July 2009 at Crystal Cove State ...

Steam and "Sanitas" in the Domestic Realm: Baths and Bathing in Southern Italy in the Middle Ages
Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, 1999This study presents five little-known bathing chambers from the region of Amalfi in southern Italy. Dating from the thirteenth century, the baths define with remarkable consistency a type of structure that has not previously been identified or considered in histories of medieval architecture in the West.
