Bacterial meningoencephalitis in a free Chimango Caracara (Milvago chimango temucoensis)

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology, 2012
A subadult male Chimango Caracara (Milvago chimango temucoensis) was found in an agricultural beef cattle field of Southern Chile. The bird was non-responsive to visual or auditory stimulation, and unable to fly. Clinical examination showed moderate body

The highest mercury concentrations ever reported in a South American bird, the Striated Caracara (Phalcoboenus australis)

open access: yes, 2021
Mercury is a widely available pollutant associated with negative effects on wildlife, especially top predators. Here, we characterized the mercury concentrations in feathers of Striated Caracara Phalcoboenus australis on Isla de los Estados (Argentina ...

Accumulations of bone remains in carancho (Caracara plancus, Aves, Falconiformes) nests from Southern Patagonia: Taphonomic and archaeological implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Se estudiaron los restos faunísticos no ingeridos recuperados en el interior y bajo un nido de carancho (Caracara plancus) localizado en los niveles aterrazados del interfluvio Coyle-Gallegos con el objetivo general de evaluar su papel como agente ...

External structures at the nest‐site predict asymmetric architecture of nests in a mud‐building bird

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
In the animal kingdom, nests are essential structures and textbook examples of extended phenotypes. However, the relationship between builders, nest traits and the nest‐site remains poorly understood. We indirectly examine whether structures in the nest‐site influence nest‐building behaviour, specifically focusing on their effect on nest architecture ...

Occurrence of a Cavity‐Nesting Tropical Swallow Is Associated to Riverbed Lithology

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 51, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Understanding the factors shaping species distribution is a key challenge in ecology and biogeography. While dispersal limitations, environmental features, and biotic interactions are commonly recognized as key determinants of species abundance and distribution, some species exhibit patchy distributions that remain hard to explain.

A highly derived avian karyotype: genome architecture and repetitive DNA in Caracara plancus (Falconidae, Aves)

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution
IntroductionThe Southern Caracara, Caracara plancus, exhibits a highly derived karyotype within Falconiformes, a lineage characterized by extensive chromosomal reshuffling.

Indirect effects of fast‐growing urban development on wildlife in a coastal protected area of Costa Rica

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 3, April 2026.
We studied the effects of urban growth on wildlife near Parque Nacional Marino las Baulas, Costa Rica. Since 1991, buildings increased 1007%, mainly in the buffer zone. We identified eight native species extracting garbage from containers, with raccoons (Procyon lotor) comprising most detections (84%), and four other species being potential sea turtle ...

Biological corridors are crucial habitat features that boost biodiversity in agroecological systems of Argentina

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 1, January–March 2026.
Our work shows for the first time in the region that biological corridors increase biodiversity and promote interactions between different components of the production system, using a methodology never before used in Argentina such as the Griffon index.

Urban Green Spaces Set the Stage for Rare Interspecific Allopreening Between Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus) and Black Vultures (Coragyps atratus)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Observations in San Antonio, Texas documented rare interspecific allopreening between crested caracaras and black vultures at Phil Hardberger Park. This represents the first recorded instance of such behavior in an urban green space, expanding the known ecological and geographic scope of interspecies social interactions.
