Elicitors of plant defence responses can trigger defence mechanisms that are able to protect plant tissues from biotic or abiotic stresses. Since one defence response involves the activation of secondary metabolites’ biosynthesis, the purpose of this ...

Abstract Premise The proper classification of taxa is often debated, particularly when organisms lack qualitative diagnostic traits. Highbush cranberry taxa (Viburnum spp.) have been the subject of such disputes since their characterization by 18th‐ and 19th‐century botanists. Despite their allopatric distributions—V.

`Duplin' and `Sampson' Southern Highbush Blueberries
`Duplin' (NC 1852) and `Sampson' (NC 2675) are southern highbush blueberry genotypes that bloom with `Croatan', the predominant highbush cultivar in eastern North Carolina, and ripen with or slightly later than `Croatan'. `Duplin' appears to have flower bud hardiness similar to standard highbush cultivars when grown at intermediate elevations in the ...

Root Distribution of `Gulfcoast' Southern Highbush Blueberry [PDF]
A field study was conducted to evaluate individual and collective influences of three soil moisture-supplementing practices (irrigation, incorporated peatmoss, and mulching) on root system development in `Gulfcoast' southern highbush blueberries. Root growth was least in plants not mulched and greatest in plants receiving all three supplements. Ranking

Postharvest Performance of Southern Highbush Blueberry Fruit [PDF]
The postharvest performance of early ripening southern highbush blueberries `Sharpblue' and `Gulfcoast' was evaluated under storage and simulated retail conditions. In general, `Gulfcoast' fruit were 28% heavier than those of `Sharpblue', which had a higher percent soluble solids concentration (SSC) and lower titratable acidity (TA).

Prospecting Antioxidant Capacities and Health-Enhancing Phytonutrient Contents of Southern Highbush Blueberry Wine Compared to Grape Wines and Fruit Liquors [PDF]
Blueberry wines may have a multitude of health benefits, but few studies have quantified the health-enhancing antioxidants, total phenols, anthocyanins and flavonoids in blueberry wines, especially the Southern highbush blueberry wine, in comparison to ...

Plants, Pollinators and Pheromones: Promises and Lies of Semiochemicals
ABSTRACT Pollination is traditionally regarded as a quintessential mutualism, yet many plants employ deceptive strategies to achieve reproductive success. Among the most intriguing is sexual deception, wherein flowers mimic the sex pheromones and visual signals of female insects to attract male pollinators—without providing any reward.

Characteristics, Bioactives and Antioxidant Activity of Illawarra Plum (Podocarpus elatus) Fruit
This study characterizes the physicochemical and antioxidant properties of mature Illawarra plums (IP), broadly categorized by flesh color into three ripening stages; unripe (green), almost ripe (blushing) and ripe (red). The ripe fruit measures 14.78 ± 3.1 (h) × 17.45 ± 2.7 (w) × 14.69 ± 3.0 mm (d) and weighs 2.5958 ± 1.2 g with no significant size ...
