3D Quantification of Subsidence During Pyrenean Retro‐Wedge Initiation: Role of Structural and Thermal Inheritance on Hyperextended Margin Inversion (Aquitaine Basin)

open access: yesTerra Nova, Volume 38, Issue 2, Page 130-140, April 2026.
ABSTRACT We present novel 3D subsidence data enabling vertical movements' quantification during the early formation of the Pyrenean retro‐wedge. From Cenomanian to Turonian times, subsidence is relatively low (~26 ± 10 m/Myr), corresponding to a brief 10 Myr thermal re‐equilibration of the European lithosphere following the hyperextended rift episode ...

Y-Chromosome haplogroup I prehistoric gene flow in Europe

open access: yesDocumenta Praehistorica, 2006
To investigate which aspects of contemporary human Y-chromosome variation in Europe are characteristic of primary colonization, late-glacial expansions from refuge areas, Neolithic dispersals or more recent events in gene flow haplogroup I was analyzed ...

A dynamic explanation for the origin of the western Mediterranean organic-rich layers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The eastern Mediterranean sapropels are among the most intensively investigated phenomena in the paleoceanographic record, but relatively little has been written regarding the origin of the equivalent of the sapropels in the western Mediterranean, the ...

Compound North American Cold and European Wind Extremes in ERA5 and CMIP6 Historical and Future Simulations. Part 1: Surface Extremes

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract This study investigates the co‐occurrence of North American cold spells and stormy weather in Europe, which we quantify here in terms of extreme wind days (EWDs). We consider both ERA5 reanalysis data and four CMIP6 climate models in the historical period and SSP5‐8.5 scenario. Three distinct regional relationships are identified in ERA5: East

Seismicity and Ground Motion Simulations of the SW Iberia Margin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this study, we focus on the region between Gorringe Bank and the Horseshoe Fault located in the SW Iberia margin, which is believed to be the site of the great 1755 earthquake.

Compound North American Cold and European Wind Extremes in ERA5 and CMIP6 Historical and Future Simulations. Part 2: Dynamical Pathways

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 6, 28 March 2026.
Abstract Wintertime North American cold spells often co‐occur with European wind extremes, forming so‐called pan‐Atlantic extremes. In Part 1 of this paper, we identified regionally varying relationships between the two sets of extremes in ERA5 reanalysis data.

Millennial-scale climatic variability between 340 000 and 270 000 years ago in SW Europe: evidence from a NW Iberian margin pollen sequence [PDF]

open access: yesClimate of the Past, 2009
We present a new high-resolution marine pollen record from NW Iberian margin sediments (core MD03-2697) covering the interval between 340 000 and 270 000 years ago, a time period centred on Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 9 and characterized by particular ...

Primary Productivity and Habitat Depth Shape Developmental Mode in European Marine Gastropods

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
Thorson's rule suggests that marine gastropods in colder, high‐latitude regions tend to have non‐pelagic (non‐drifting) larval development. However, this study on 94 European gastropod species found that the rule disappears when examined at finer spatial scales, with temperature and phylogeny having little influence.
