Sensitivity of Ocean Carbon Sink Estimates to Rare Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
We evaluate the impact of new data in the annual release of SOCATv2024 on air‐sea carbon dioxide (CO2) flux reconstructions. Using the pCO2‐Residual and LDEO‐HPD methods, we reconstruct surface ocean fCO2 based on SOCATv2023 and SOCATv2024.

A Southern Indian Ocean database of hydrographic profiles obtained with instrumented elephant seals

open access: yes, 2014
The instrumentation of southern elephant seals with satellite-linked CTD tags has offered unique temporal and spatial coverage of the Southern Indian Ocean since 2004.

Spatial variations in silicate-to-nitrate ratios in Southern Ocean surface waters are controlled in the short term by physics rather than biology [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2020
The nutrient composition (high in nitrate but low in silicate) of Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) forces diatom scarcity across much of the global surface ocean. This is because diatoms cannot grow without silicate. After formation and downwelling at the

The Last Deglaciation in the Southern Ocean [PDF]

open access: yesPaleoceanography, 1989
The isotopic and micropaleontological deglacial records of three deep‐sea cores from 44°S to 55°S have been dated by accelerator mass spectrometry. The available records did not allow accurate dating of the initiation of the deglaciation. By 13,000 years B.P., sea surface temperatures reached values similar to the present values.

Development of the Regional Carbon Cycle Model in the Central Pacific Sector of the Southern Ocean

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2022
This study develops a new regional model of the Southern Ocean including an improved representation of the iron biogeochemistry and ecosystem component, nesting within a biogeochemical ocean state estimate, and benchmarking with a suite of observations ...

Antarctic Bottom Water Sensitivity to Spatio‐Temporal Variations in Antarctic Meltwater Fluxes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
Ice sheet melting into the Southern Ocean can change the formation and properties of the Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). Ocean models often mimic ice sheet melting by adding freshwater fluxes in the Southern Ocean under diverse spatial distributions.

Competing impacts of tropical Pacific and Atlantic on Southern Ocean inter-decadal variability

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
The observed Southern Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) has experienced prominent inter-decadal variability nearly in phase with the Inter-decadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO), but less associated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV ...

Rapid Southern Ocean front transitions in an eddy-resolving ocean GCM [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The formation of persistent multiple fronts is an established feature of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Front strength and location are closely linked to eddy properties and therefore have important implications for the eddy-driven closure of ...

Current Systems in the Southern Ocean [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The Southern Ocean contains a large, wind-driven current, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, which carries approximately 170×106 m3 of water eastward around Antarctica within multiple filamented jets. To the south of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, within the Antarctic marginal seas, the Weddell Gyre transports water cyclonically (clockwise) around ...

Pathways and timescales of Southern Ocean hydrothermal iron and manganese transport

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Scarcity of iron and manganese limits the efficiency of the biological carbon pump over large areas of the Southern Ocean. The importance of hydrothermal vents as a source of these micronutrients to the euphotic zone of the Southern Ocean is debated ...
