Biogeography of cephalopods in the Southern Ocean using habitat suitability prediction models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Our understanding of how environmental change in the Southern Ocean will affect marine diversity, habitats and distribution remain limited. The habitats and distributions of Southern Ocean cephalopods are generally poorly understood, and yet such ...

Building‐Tailored Hierarchical Electrochromism with Optimized Control Strategies

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study addresses the material‐application disconnect in electrochromic smart windows by establishing a building‐centric paradigm. It develops a Prussian blue (PB)‐based electrochromic device (ECD) with four spectral states via dual mechanisms, and proposes two control strategies.

Investigating the role that the Southern Ocean biological pump plays in determining global ocean oxygen concentrations and deoxygenation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Global ocean circulation connects marine biogeochemical cycles through the long-range transport of nutrients and oxygen with the Southern Ocean (SO) acting as a water mass crossroads. The biological pump in the SO has been shown to play an important role

Overview of the Nordic Seas CARINA data and salinity measurements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Water column data of carbon and carbon relevant hydrographic and hydrochemical parameters from 188 previously non-publicly available cruises in the Arctic, Atlantic, and Southern Ocean have been retrieved and merged into a new database: CARINA (CARbon IN

Nanocellulose–MOF‐Derived Carbon Hybrid Aerogels with Hierarchical Micro/Nanostructures for Solar‐Driven Water Evaporation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A biodegradable, cellulose‐based bilayer solar evaporator is fabricated entirely via aqueous, sequential ice‐templating. The hybrid structure combines vertically aligned cellulose nanofibers for rapid water transport with a metal‐orgnic framework (MOF)‐derived porous carbon layer decorated with plasmonic nanoparticles for enhanced photothermal ...

Exploring mechanisms for the decrease of atmospheric CO₂ during the last glacial maximum using a four-box ocean model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, 2001.Includes bibliographical references (leaf 33).A record of carbon dioxide for the last 400,000 years revealed that atmospheric CO2 decreased ...

A Pull‐Out Mooring Wave Energy Converter: Design, Analysis, and Application

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A pull‐out mooring wave energy converter (POM‐WEC) with a high‐performance electromagnetic power take‐off system efficiently converts low‐frequency wave excitation into high‐speed rotor motion, enabling reliable energy harvesting in real marine environments.

Southern Ocean High‐Resolution (SOhi) Modeling Along the Antarctic Ice Sheet Periphery

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The Southern Ocean plays a major role in controlling the evolution of Antarctic glaciers and in turn their impact on sea level rise. We present the Southern Ocean high‐resolution (SOhi) simulation of the MITgcm ocean model to reproduce ice‐ocean ...

Nitrogen uptake rates and f-ratios in the Equatorial and Southern Indian Ocean [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We report data on nitrate, ammonium and urea uptake rates from the Equatorial and Southern Indian Oceans. Productivity (0.81–2.23 mmol N m–2 d–1) over the Equatorial Indian Ocean was low, but the f-ratio (0.13–0.45) was relatively high.
