Seismic structure of the continental margin of French Guiana: implications for the rifting and early spreading of the equatorial Atlantic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Recent studies of passive continental margins suggest that the rifting process produces a variety of structural styles. The along-strike continuity of these rifted margins is punctuated by significant lateral offsets, known as transform margins.

Missing link in the Southern Ocean: sampling the marine benthic fauna of remote Bouvet Island

open access: yes, 2006
Bouvet (Bouvetøya) is a geologically young and very remote island just south of the Polar Front. Here we report samples taken during the RV ‘‘Polarstern’’ cruise ANTXXI/2 on 3 days in November 2003 and January 2004.

Post‐Release Mortality of European Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Discarded From Small‐Scale Estuarine Fishing

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Estuaries provide essential habitats for many fish species, but their confined and accessible nature may increase fish vulnerability to capture, and few empirical studies have quantified the value of restricting net fisheries in such areas.

Deep-sea nematodes (Comesomatidae) from the Southwest Pacific Ocean: five new species and three new species records

open access: yes, 2012
The present study describes five new free-living nematode species and provides three new species records of the family Comesomatidae (genera Cervonema Wieser, 1954, Dorylaimopsis Ditlevsen, 1918, Hopperia Vitiello, 1969, and Kenyanema Muthumbi et al ...

Meiofauna from Almirante Câmara Canyon and Its Adjacent Open Slope, Southwest Atlantic Ocean

open access: yesCoasts
The patterns of meiofaunal distribution in a submarine canyon and adjacent open-slope habitats at Campos Basin, southwest Atlantic, were investigated. A total of eight stations was sampled, four inside the Canyon Almirante Câmara and four on the adjacent

Lack of Compliance in Gillnet Fisheries Regulations Increases Risk to a Vulnerable Species

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article presents an analysis of regulatory compliance in a Brazilian gillnet fishery, based on Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) tracking data. Satellite transmissions records, interpreted as proxies for gillnet haulings events, were analyzed and classified using a neural network to assess the level of compliance of the gillnet fleet.

BIOECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF ALTERNATIVE SELECTION PATTERNS IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC SILVER HAKE FISHERY

open access: yes
In this paper a bioeconomic simulation of the U.S. fisheries for silver hake, Merluccius bilinearis, is presented. The model design combines elements of age-structured population and harvest yield models with economics of the silver hake fishery.

Southwest Atlantic intermediate and deep water circulation : 20,000 years of water mass re-organization and current strength variability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
As one of the major players of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, the deep southern component water (SCW), comprising Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (LCDW) and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), ventilates the deep waters and influences global ...

Effects of Body Size and Environmental Region on the Nutritional Value of Small Pelagic Species in the California Current

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We evaluated the effects of regional environment and body size on the nutritional traits of five small pelagic species differing in habitat use, feeding behavior, and importance as prey for top predators in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME).

Lanternfish (Myctophidae) from eastern Brazil, southwest Atlantic Ocean

open access: yesLatin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2014
Twenty-nine species from 11 genera of Myctophidae were taken in daytime midwater and bottom trawl hauls off eastern Brazil (11º-22ºS). Trawls were performed aboard the French R/V Thalassa to depths from 19 to 2271 m, including samples from shelf, slope ...
