On-chip cooling for detectors in space applications
2008 IEEE Sensors, 2008Miniature Joule-Thomson (JT) coolers can be used for cooling small optical detectors. Both, cooler and detector can be integrated on a single chip by means of micro-electromechanical systems technology. For future space missions, the European Space Agency is interested in on-chip detector cooling for the temperature range 70 K - 250 K.

Transient Cooling of a Sphere in Space
Journal of Heat Transfer, 1970A method is presented for determining the transient temperature distribution of a solid sphere cooling in space. The sphere is assumed initially to be at a uniform temperature and then instantaneously subjected to the radiation sink of space at time zero. This nonlinear problem was solved by using finite-difference computing techniques.

Cooling System for Space Application
2002In this paper a miniature single-stage Stirling cryocooler for cooling a MCT infrared detector is introduced. The concept of the cryocooler is based on the Oxford-type Stirling refrigerator featuring special flexure suspension springs, linear drive motors, and clearance seals without wear for long-term operation.
