A novel spaceborne lidar calibration technique: the multi-calibration lidar experiment [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Conference on Space Optics — ICSO 2006, 2017
Although the noticeable progress achieved by ground-based lidars, using lidars as an operational spaceborne i nstruments still poses issu es to be solved. A key issue is the long-term stability of the instrument over the mission lifetime, as a whole as well as at the level of each subsystem; another important issue is related to the processes of ...

Estimating Plant Species Richness With Sentinel and Landsat Data Across Ecosystems in China

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
438 field plots were used to estimate plant diversity across ecosystems; 18 spectral indices were derived from Sentinel and Landsat data; EVI, DVI, PSRI, NDVI, PRI, GNDVI, and GMEVI were identified as powerful indicators for predicting plant alpha diversity.

Ocean subsurface studies with the CALIPSO spaceborne lidar [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2014
AbstractThe primary objective of the Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission is to study the climate impact of clouds and aerosols in the atmosphere. However, recent studies have demonstrated that CALIPSO also collects information about the ocean subsurface.

Remote sensing and geospatial analysis for the study of plant community regeneration in human‐modified landscapes

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Natural regeneration is essential for maintaining functionally diverse and resilient plant communities in human‐modified landscapes. To design and implement successful conservation and restoration initiatives in these landscapes, research on the environmental and anthropogenic drivers of natural regeneration must be scaled up beyond ...

High‐resolution LiDAR and stereo‐DEMs for debris flow analysis in the Western Ghats, India: Sediment volume computation and run‐out modeling

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 3, March 2026.
The 2020 Pettimudi debris flow in the Western Ghats of India killed 70 people. Our study using stereo‐DEM, UAV‐based LiDAR data, and field data estimated the sediment loss as 17 × 104 m3. Abstract Computation of sediment volume and accurate modeling of run‐out using high‐resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) are essential for assessing debris flow

Peering Inside Tropical Cyclones With the WIVERN Space‐Borne Doppler Radar

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract The WIVERN (Wind Velocity Radar Nephoscope) mission significantly enhances the global tropical cyclone observing system. Operating from a 500 km near‐polar orbit, the 3 m diameter conically scanning antenna provides an 800 km swath. The radar operated at 94 GHz (3 mm wavelength) provides high‐resolution observations with a vertical resolution ...

Influences of Structural and Species Diversity on Forest Resistance to Drought

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 29, Issue 3, March 2026.
Forest structural richness and species evenness respectively show positive and negative relationships with forest resistance to drought. These relationships between richness and resistance and between evenness and resistance become stronger under more severe droughts.
