LIDAR add-on for spaceborne optical communication terminals

2017 IEEE International Conference on Space Optical Systems and Applications (ICSOS), 2017
Optical communication terminals consist of various subsystems that are common to LIDAR systems, i.e. for ranging and 3D surface mapping. This paper explores how to modify such a communications payload to serve as a submeter precision LIDAR, with minimum impact on complexity, power consumption and mass increase.

Wind vector retrieval algorithm from spaceborne lidar data

Acta Oceanologica Sinica, 2014
The principal purpose of this paper is to extract entire sea surface wind’s information from spaceborne lidar, and particularly to utilize a appropriate algorithm for removing the interference information due to whitecaps and subsurface water. Wind speeds are obtained through empirical relationship with sea surface mean square slopes.

ADM-Aeolus: the first spaceborne wind lidar

SPIE Proceedings, 2006
The Atmospheric Dynamics Mission ADM-Aeolus will be the wind lidar in orbit. The aim is to provide global observations of wind profiles with a vertical resolution that will satisfy the requirements of the World Meteorological Organization. ADM-Aeolus will carry just one large instrument-the Atmospheric Laser Doppler Lidar Instrument (ALADIN). This is

ESA Progress in Spaceborne Doppler Wind Lidar Activities

Coherent Laser Radar, 1995
Space-borne global wind observation is considered a high-priority mission for the next two decades, in view of the unique benefits that operational meteorology and climate research would receive. A satellite-borne Doppler wind lidar has been recognised a potential corner-stone instrument of future wind-monitoring systems, due to its capability of ...
