Spaceborne rain radar mission and instrument analysis

IGARSS '96. 1996 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2002
The main objective of this paper, based upon a Pre-phase A study founded by ESA, is to define a preliminary design of a spaceborne rain radar from a precise review of user requirements proposed for climate research and operational meteorology purpose. A mission analysis defines the most suitable space segment, taking into account the instrument related

Parallel processing of spaceborne imaging radar data

Proceedings of the 1995 ACM/IEEE conference on Supercomputing (CDROM) - Supercomputing '95, 1995
We discuss the results of a collaborative project on parallel processing of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, carried out between the NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Intel Scalable Systems Division (SSD).

Next-generation spaceborne Cloud Profiling Radars

2009 IEEE Radar Conference, 2009
One of the instruments recommended for deployment on the Aerosol/Cloud/Echosystems (ACE) mission is a new advanced Cloud Profiling Radar (ACE-CPR). The atmospheric sciences community has initiated the effort to define the scientific requirements for this instrument.

Spaceborne Imaging Radar: Monitoring of Ocean Waves

Science, 1980
A well-organized, very low energy ocean swell system off the East Coast of the United States was tracked with the Seasat synthetic aperture radar from deep water, across the continental shelf, and into shallow water. The results indicate that spaceborne imaging radar may be used to accurately measure ocean wavelength and direction, even in coastal ...

Improvement to radar reflectivity factor algorithm for spaceborne precipitation radar

IET Conference Publications, 2009
Study of spaceborne precipitation radar retrieval algorithms is important in both algorithm development and data application. This paper presents improvement to radar reflectivity factor retrieval algorithm, which introduces equivalent raindrop diameter in each resolution cell and judges whether the scattering obeys Rayleigh condition.

Eddies in the Western Mediterranean Seen by spaceborne radar

2016 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2016
In the present study we analyze manifestations of submeso- and mesoscale eddies in the Western Mediterranean Sea found in Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) imagery of 2010–2011. Location of mesoscale eddies found in the imagery outlined the main stream of the basin.

STAP simulation and processing for spaceborne radar

2004
Spaceborne radar (SBR) has been proposed for various military and civilian applications. To help mitigate the exorbitant cost of fielding and testing of the spaceborne radar prototypes, engineers have come to appreciate the key role that simulation technologies play in the development process.

Weight and cost estimation for spaceborne radar systems

1998 IEEE Aerospace Conference Proceedings (Cat. No.98TH8339), 2002
A simplified method is presented for making preliminary weight and cost estimates of spaceborne radar satellites and constellations for the detection of airborne moving targets. The power-aperture product requirement of a single spaceborne radar for a given area coverage rate and target size is written as a function of satellite altitude.

Spaceborne Imaging Radar: Geologic and Oceanographic Applications

Science, 1980
Synoptic, large-area radar images of the earth's land and ocean surface, obtained from the Seasat orbiting spacecraft, show the potential for geologic mapping and for monitoring of ocean surface patterns. Structural and topographic features such as lineaments, anticlines, folds and domes, drainage patterns, stratification, and roughness units can be ...

The spaceborne radar programme of the european space agency

Air & Space Europe, 2000
Although primarily dedicated to Earth science, the 10 years experience acquired by the ESA with the Earth Remote Sensing (ERS) mission has shown that its Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data were also of use to many mapping and surveillance activities. Such an interest is primarily related to the SAR capability to generate images regardless of sunlight ...
