OBSERVATIONS ON SPALLING*

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1934
If a sphere of clay at room temperature be immersed suddenly in a red hot furnace, spalls fly off its surface. These spalls are more or less circular disks, of somewhat definite thickness. They do not form instantly, but a finite time elapses between immersion and spalling. This time interval also is consistent and definite.

Lightning Spalling

American Antiquity, 1939
Of interest to archaeologists is a recent paper by J. D. Laudermilk and T. G. Kennard on the little known subject of lightning as an agent of weathering of exposed rocks. As a locality for field study of this natural phenomenon, they chose an area in the Mohave Desert near Yermo, California, which is known as a place of a great deal of electrical ...

THEORY OF SPALLING*

Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1933
ABSTRACT This paper registers objection to the purely mathematical parts of F. H. Norton's The physical nature of the spalling process will be dealt with later.

Spall strength of sapphire

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2012
The spall strength of c-cut sapphire has been measured as a function of the load duration and peak stress. In experiments, the VISAR particle velocity histories at the interface between the sapphire samples and a water or LiF window were recorded. The peak shock stress was varied from 17.3 GPa up to 21.4 GPa that is below the Hugoniot elastic limit ...

Spalling of Brick

2002
Brick is normally selected for use in exterior walls and paving by owners and designers because of its durability, appearance, and low maintenance. However, occasional spalling of the exposed surface of brick in service has occurred that has created concerns on the durability of brick and on the accuracy of the preconstruction indicators of brick ...

Spalling Sensitivity Test on Concrete

2018
Concrete sensitivity to spalling in fire is still a critical issue, as no reliable predictive model is currently available. Hence, so far, experimental testing is the most effective means of investigation. This is the reason why an experimental setup has been designed (and discussed in the RILEM TC 256 SPF) by the authors, based on 800 × 800 mm ...

Spall Fracture in ARMCO Iron: Structure Evolution and Spall Strength

2009
The experimental study of material responses in a wide range of loading rate reveals some insight into dynamic failure and shows the linkage of solid behavior with the evolution of mesoscopic defects such as microcracks and microshears. This situation is strongly connected to dynamic and shock wave loading, when the time for mesodefect evolution ...

Spalling in liquids

Physics Letters A, 1981
Abstract A new mechanism for exciting cavitation has been identified. Surface-reflected shock waves can produced localized spalling in liquids. This spalling mechanism forms cavities which then collapse under the influence of gravity and atmospheric pressure.

Spall plane formation near spall threshold for different metals

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2000
Using planar-plate impact methods in combination with a VISAR, various metals including armor steels have been investigated with respect to their response to shock loading and their spall strength. Often two different failure modes are visible especially near spall threshold conditions. The spall plane formation process seems to take place in two steps:
