Some Observations on the Heave Behavior of Spar Platforms

Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, 1998
The spar platform is receiving considerable attention from the offshore petroleum industry, especially following the successful introduction of the first production spar in the Gulf of Mexico by Oryx and CNG in 1996. This paper presents a collection of observations regarding important heave characteristics of spar platforms that have been gleaned from ...

Investigation on Parametrically Excited Motions of Spar Platforms in Waves

Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications, 2019
As offshore oil exploration goes into deeper waters, spar platforms appear as a good alternative for oil field developments due to their inherent hydrodynamic behaviour regarding its vertical motions response in waves. Spar’s long natural periods in heave and pitch guarantee the good linear responses of the associated motions; however, nonlinear ...

The Spar Platform – Transforming Deepwater Development

Offshore Technology Conference, 2020
Abstract This paper reviews the evolution of spar designs, focusing on the progression of work that ultimately lead to the application of this new concept to the oil industry. This papers updates and expands on a previous paper by one of the co-authors.

SS: Spar Technology - The Internationalization of the Spar Platform

Offshore Technology Conference, 2009
Abstract One of the key features of the Spar platform is its low motion response characteristics. This results in a high degree of functional flexibility that has enabled the Spar to be employed in a variety of different applications such as wet tree host, dry tree wellhead, with or without platform drilling ...

Nonlinear Instabilities of Spar Platforms in Waves

Volume 4: Offshore Geotechnics; Ronald W. Yeung Honoring Symposium on Offshore and Ship Hydrodynamics, 2012
Spars are widely recognized as an excellent choice for deep water applications due to their hydrodynamic characteristics. However, some relatively recent works report the occurrence of large motions in the plane perpendicular to wave incidence direction, i.e., not directly excited by waves.

Nonlinear Dynamics of a Spar Platform

Volume 1: 24th Conference on Mechanical Vibration and Noise, Parts A and B, 2012
Spar floating platforms have been largely used for deep water drilling, oil and natural gas production and storage of these fluids. In extreme weather conditions such structures may exhibit a highly nonlinear dynamic behavior. In this paper a 2-DOF model is used to study the heave and pitch coupled response in free and forced vibration.

Response analysis of spar platform with wind turbine

Ships and Offshore Structures, 2013
Floating wind turbine platforms are the most economical means for deploying offshore wind turbines in deep waters. The merit of spar platform is the large range of topside payloads, favourable motions compared with other floating structures and minimum hull/deck interface. The main objective of this paper is to present the response analysis of the spar

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Spar Platform

Advanced Science Letters, 2012
In recent decades, oil and gas exploration technology has moved towards the offshore deep-water deposits. Conventional fixed jacket type platforms and bottom supported compliant platforms are found to be inefficient for exploring these resources. Floating Spar platform is suitable alternative in deep water regions.
