Spatial deixis serves as an important intersection between grammatical structure and the physical setting of speech. Demonstratives are a prominent means for the expression of spatial deixis; they are found in all languages yet illustrate considerable cross-linguistic diversity in their grammatical, semantic, and pragmatic properties.

Demonstration of spatially inhomogeneous vector beams with elliptical symmetry

We experimentally demonstrate vector beams having an elliptical symmetry of polarization, breaking the cylindrical symmetry of vector beams (e.g., radially polarized beams). Applications of such beams vary from material processing, lithography, and optical memories to excitation of elliptically shaped nanoparticles and plasmonic structures.

Learning to Use a Ratchet by Modeling Spatial Relations in Demonstrations

We introduce a framework where visual features, describing the interaction among a robot hand, a tool, and an assembly fixture, can be learned efficiently using a small number of demonstrations. We illustrate the approach by torquing a bolt with the Robonaut-2 humanoid robot using a handheld ratchet.
