Spatial Mode Division Multiplexing of Few Mode Fiber

European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication, 2012
The independent excitation and detection of spatial modes in few-mode fiber networks presents major challenges. This paper presents novel spatial mode-division-multiplexing techniques based on planar couplers and asymmetric Y-junctions. These developments may play a role in future high-capacity few-mode fiber telecommunications.

Computer Generated Hologram in Spatial Division Multiplexing

Frontiers in Optics 2015, 2015
We report here on generic space-division multiplexing and demultiplexing units for high-throughput transmission in multimode fibers, with the aid of computer generated hologram spatial filters.

55-Spatial-Mode Fiber for Space Division Multiplexing

Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2023, 2023
We report the design and the fabrication of a trench-assisted graded-index-core fiber that supports 55 spatial modes. The fiber is optimized to ensure low macro-bend losses for all the modes, while minimizing the differential-mode-group delays.

Photonic lantern spatial multiplexers in space-division multiplexing

2013 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series, 2013
Photonic-lanterns are lossless spatial-multiplexers that scramble N signals onto the N modes of a multi-mode fiber without mode- dependent loss. They can scale to large N and have enabled transmission over a fiber supporting 12 spatial and polarization-modes.

Spatial division multiplexing of space-time block codes

International Conference on Communication Technology Proceedings, 2003. ICCT 2003., 2004
In this paper we propose to derive benefit from multiple antennas to achieve high data rates using a spatial division multiplexing (SDM) based scheme combined with space-time block coding (STBC). This scheme allows to transmit simultaneously N/P different streams from N antennas, each stream being encoded using a STBC designed for P outputs.

Modulation and Coding for Spatial Division Multiplexing Systems

Latin America Optics and Photonics Conference, 2018
We present modulation formats designed for the SDM channels with hard-decision FEC. We also review how soft-decision FEC with codeword interleaving over spatial modes enabled record bitrate-distance products in few mode fiber transmission.

Combined Spatial Division Multiplexing and Spatial Reuse across Decentral Wireless LANs

2021 19th Mediterranean Communication and Computer Networking Conference (MedComNet), 2021
The upcoming IEEE 802.11ax standard introduces spatial reuse and enhanced spatial division multiplexing as two measures to improve user throughput by parallel transmitting links and spatial streams. Related work shows that the proposed spatial reuse concept does not fully utilize the spatial reuse potential.

Optical filter multiplexing using spatial code division approach

SPIE Proceedings, 2003
One of the most effective "traditional" communication methods is code division multiple access (CDMA). In this paper, we suggest the use of this approach for spatial filtering applied to images. The approach is to multiplex several filters into one plane while keeping their mutual orthogonality.

Efficient optical amplification for spatial division multiplexing

SPIE Proceedings, 2012
Spatial division multiplexing has been proposed for fiber capacity increase as an alternative to enhanced bandwidth efficiency by higher order modulation or wider wavelength bands. The commercial viability of this approach will depend strongly on the feasibility of cost and energy efficient optical amplification.
