Phenotypic signatures of urbanization are scale-dependent : a multi-trait study on a classic urban exploiter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Understanding at which spatial scales anthropogenic selection pressures operate most strongly is a prerequisite for efficient conservation and management of urban biodiversity.

Patient‐Level Barriers and Facilitators to Inpatient Physical Therapy in Adolescents and Young Adults With a Hematological Malignancy: A Qualitative Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Despite their increased risk for functional impairment resulting from cancer and its treatments, few adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with a hematological malignancy receive the recommended or therapeutic dose of exercise per week during inpatient hospitalizations.

Limited conservation efficacy of large-scale marine protected areas for Pacific skipjack and bigeye tunas

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Large-scale, no-take marine protected areas (MPAs) have been established in several locations in the Pacific and expansion of such areas to reach 30% of the ocean area is actively promoted in some quarters.

Species prioritization for monitoring and management in regional multiple species conservation plans. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Successful conservation plans are not solely achieved by acquiring optimally designed reserves. Ongoing monitoring and management of the biodiversity in those reserves is an equally important, but often neglected or poorly executed, part of the ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Evaluating the Effects of a Deep-Water Marine Protected Area a Decade After Closure: A Multifaceted Approach Reveals Equivocal Benefits to Reef Fish Populations

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are increasingly used to rebuild fish populations. In 2009, eight MPAs were designated off the southeast United States with the goal of rebuilding populations of long-lived deep-water reef fishes. We tested whether reef fish

Spatial Management of Fisheries [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Resource Economics, 2004
This paper discusses recent advancements in scientific understanding about the spatial distribution of abundance in the ocean and the processes that determine abundance. Some discussion of the role of monitoring and information technology is presented, and examples of new findings are given. New findings run the gamut from slow processes operating over

Mechanisms of parasite‐mediated disruption of brain vessels

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Parasites can affect the blood vessels of the brain, often causing serious neurological problems. This review explains how different parasites interact with and disrupt these vessels, what this means for brain health, and why these processes matter. Understanding these mechanisms may help us develop better ways to prevent or treat brain infections in ...

Managing Urban Spatial Growth

open access: yes, 2021
Cities will be home to 2 billion new residents by 2045, and the pressure to develop land in and around cities is growing. This will pose a great challenge to lower‐income cities since they tend to grow through slums and other informal settlements. Slum residents have inadequate and inequitable
