From patient advocacy to patient‐driven research: Building active partnerships beginning at the bench to reach the bedside

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Research is strongest when conducted alongside patients, not just about them. Patient research organizations help integrate patient perspectives into research priorities, study design, and scientific meetings, leading to meaningful patient outcomes and development of relevant therapies.

Determinants of undergraduate bioscience engagement: Validating attendance barriers and classroom spatial behaviour across institutions

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Student engagement extends beyond simple attendance. Across 891 bioscience students from three universities, attendance behaviour was associated mainly with structural influences, whereas classroom spatial behaviour reflected affective and sensory factors.

Tactual perception of material properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper reviews tactual perception of material properties such as roughness, compliance, coldness and friction. Psychophysical functions relating physical properties to perception are discussed, as well as discrimination thresholds.

Socio-spatial isomorphism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
It is contended that space can act as a metaphor for social relationships. The thesis draws on schema theory from cognitive psychology to explain how the affective qualities of social stimuli serve to bias the 'cognitive maps' of individuals ...

Response of winter bird communities to environmental variables in riparian zones of cold region: a case study in Shenyang, Northeast of China

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution
IntroductionLandscape changes resulting from urbanization have profound impacts on biodiversity, threatening the habitat of resident species. Birds are valuable research subjects because of their diversity, wide distribution, and particular sensitivity ...

Baseline Neuroinflammation Stratifies TSPO‐PET Response to Disease‐Modifying Therapy in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To investigate which baseline clinical and imaging characteristics best predict TSPO‐PET‐measurable reduction in glial activation following treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), to utilize this information for designing more efficient biomarker‐based clinical trials targeting glial activation.

Spatial Frequency Discrimination of Band-limited Periodic Targets: Effects of Stimulus Contrast, Bandwidth and Retinal Eccentricity [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Two experiments were conducted to explore the ability of human observers to discriminate the spatial frequency of briefly-presented, Gaussian-truncated sinewave gratings.

Effects of the Design of Overview Maps on Three-Dimensional Virtual Environment Interfaces

open access: yesSensors, 2020
This study examined how users acquire spatial knowledge in an onscreen three-dimensional virtual environment when using overview maps. This experiment adopted a three (the size of overview maps) x two (the transparency of overview maps) between-subjects ...

Gravity‐Dependent Modulation of Downbeat Nystagmus: Insights From Velocity‐Storage Dysfunction

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Downbeat nystagmus varies with head position, a phenomenon termed gravity‐dependent modulation. We aimed to clarify its mechanism using a velocity‐storage model. Methods In 10 patients with downbeat nystagmus due to cerebellar disorders, we recorded eye movements at different pitch‐ and roll‐axis head positions.
