Tunable Extraordinary Optical Transmission in the Long‐Wavelength Infrared Range Using Electrostatic MEMS Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A MEMS‐integrated metamaterial filter enables continuous, low‐voltage spectral tuning in the long‐wavelength infrared (LWIR). The device employs extraordinary optical transmission in a dual suspended metasurface stack, where electrostatic actuation precisely controls the intermembrane air gap.

Visual grounding of spatial relations in recurrent neural language models

open access: yes, 2018
The task of automatically describing an image with natural language requires techniques to associate linguistic units with their corresponding visual representations.

A Conceptual Framework for Modelling Spatial Relations

open access: yesInformation Technology And Control, 2019
Various approaches lie behind the modelling of spatial relations, which is a heterogeneous and interdisciplinary field. In this paper, we introduce a conceptual framework to describe the characteristics of various models and how they relate each other. A first categorization is made among three representation levels: geometric, computational, and user.

Multiobjective Codesign Optimization of a Planar Pneumatic Artificial Muscle‐Based Snake‐Like Robot for Enhanced Agility and Energy Efficiency

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A codesign multiobjective optimization framework was developed to enhance the morphology and controller of a snake‐like robot driven by artificial muscles. It improved planar locomotion, agility, and power efficiency. The approach optimized link geometry and controller gains, revealing that shorter muscles near joints and longer linkages maximize ...

The role of expertise, semantics, and learning in spatial memory

open access: yes, 2012
This research investigates the mechanisms that underpin object location memory. It approaches this endeavour by examining a recently reported phenomenon of spatial memory, that of exclusivity.

Grounding Large Language Models for Robot Task Planning Using Closed‐Loop State Feedback

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
BrainBody‐Large Language Model (LLM) introduces a hierarchical, feedback‐driven planning framework where two LLMs coordinate high‐level reasoning and low‐level control for robotic tasks. By grounding decisions in real‐time state feedback, it reduces hallucinations and improves task reliability.

Socio-economic Relations and Urban Spatial Formation

open access: yes, 1981
This thesis constructs a theoretical framework for the application of Marx's work to urban spatial formation. It is based on Marx's concept of the dialectic as internal relations, examining the concept with regard to the socio-spatial dialectic and the ...

Continuum Mechanics Modeling of Flexible Spring Joints in Surgical Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A new mechanical model of a tendon‐actuated helical extension spring joint in surgical robots is built using Cosserat rod theory. The model can implicitly handle the unknown contacts between adjacent coils and numerically predict spring shapes from straight to significantly bent under actuation forces.

Path Composition of Positional Relations Integrating Qualitative and Fuzzy Knowledge

open access: yes, 2002
Qualitative models of spatial knowledge concern the description of both objects and their relative position in space. In this context, fuzzy knowledge concerns the degree of likelihood with which a qualitative spatial relation can be mapped to a ...
