Unidirectional Tape‐Based Composites from Hemp and Pineapple Leaf Fiber: Mechanical Performance in Conventional and Bio‐Based Matrices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The study investigates novel semi‐finished products made of unidirectionally arranged hemp or pineapple leaf fiber‐reinforced composites produced from different matrices. The materials are analyzed in terms of their mechanical and interfacial properties and void content.

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.

Selective laser melting of aluminium alloys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes, such as selective laser melting, enable powdered metals to be formed into arbitrary 3D shapes. For aluminium alloys, which are desirable in many high-value applications for their low density and good ...

Tribological Performance of 60NiTi Alloy Under Varying Contact Conditions and Elevated Temperatures in Linear Reciprocating Sliding

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the tribological response of 60NiTi alloy under dry, water‐lubricated and high‐temperature conditions. The alloy exhibits decreasing wear volume and friction with increasing temperature due to the formation of protective oxide layers. The work clarifies dominant wear mechanisms and demonstrates the suitability of 60NiTi for high‐

A comprehensive characterization of virgin and recycled 316L powders during laser powder bed fusion

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2022
The primary constraints hindering the widespread adoption of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) are expensive raw materials, internal defects, difficulty in controlling the quality and stability, and lack of consistency in the powder feedstock.

Timescales and mechanisms of formation of amorphous silica coatings on fresh basalts at Kilauea Volcano, Hawai’i [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Young basalts from Kilauea Volcano, Hawai'i, frequently feature opaque surface coatings, 1–80 μm thick, composed of amorphous silica and Fe-Ti oxides. These coatings are the product of interaction of the basaltic surface with volcanically-derived acidic ...

Nanoindentation Criteria for Combinatorial Thin Film Libraries

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thin‐film material libraries are compositional spreads used for screening composition‐structure‐property relationships. Nanoindentation is often used to characterize mechanical behavior across these systems, however variations in methodology are widespread.

Reduction of oxygen content in laser powder bed fusion process atmosphere – Effects on stochastic defect formation and mechanical properties

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Stochastic defects in materials manufactured via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) can severely compromise mechanical performance and are challenging to predict and detect, thus motivating the development of defect mitigation strategies.
