Brook trout spawning areas in lakes
Ecology of Freshwater Fish, 1998Abstract—Nine lakes containing self‐sustaining populations of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were surveyed to provide quantitative information on the abundance and distribution of redd sites. We measured rates of groundwater flow at redds in four of these lakes, and in one of these lakes we also compared the frequency of site use over four years ...

Spawning Area of the Japanese Eel
2003The millennium-old mystery of eel spawning that has fascinated naturalists since the time of Aristotle still remains largely unsolved. There are only 3 species, the European eel, Anguilla anguilla, the American eel, A. rostrata, and the Japanese eel, A.

Spawning on the edge: spawning grounds and nursery areas around the southern African coastline
Marine and Freshwater Research, 2002The southern African coastline is dominated by strong currents. Along the eastern seaboard, the warm western boundary Agulhas Current sweeps close inshore along the shelf edge before diverging from the coast on the Agulhas Bank and retroflecting back into the Indian Ocean.

Discovery of the spawning area for Japanese eel
Nature, 1992AT the beginning of this century, the Danish oceanographer Johannes Schmidt outlined the spawning area of Atlantic eels Anguilla spp. in the Sargasso Sea1,2But the spawning location of the Japanese eel A. japonicain the Pacific Ocean has eluded researchers for over 60 years. I report here the discovery of their spawning location.

Trophic structure and microbial activity in a spawning area of Engraulis encrasicolus
Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2018The abundance, biomass and size-structure of planktonic populations, and the microbial metabolic processes were studied in the Sicily Channel, one of the most important spawning areas in the Mediterranean for anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), a pelagic species of commercial interest.

Spawning Areas of the Atlantic Eels
2003In 1904, when the Danish biologist, Johannes Schmidt, aboard the steam research vessel Thor captured a 7-cm-long leptocephalus of the European eel west of the Faroe Islands in the northeastern North Atlantic Ocean (Schmidt 1906),the chase was on! In fact, it was only in 1893 that the Italian zoologists B. Grassi and S.

A bedform morphology hypothesis for spawning areas of Chinese sturgeon
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 2008Results from previous research suggested that geomorphic characteristics may be important controlling factors among other microhabitat variables for spawning fish. We investigated the bedform morphology of seven spawning areas (five historic and two present spawning areas) of Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) by analysis of relief maps of the ...

Estimating spawning habitat availability in flooded areas of the river Waal, the Netherlands
River Research and Applications, 2009AbstractFish spawning habitat availability in the river Waal is significantly influenced by seasonal and annual variations in discharge. In this paper we develop habitat suitability models, based on a literature survey of spawning preferences of the commonly occurring species roach (Rutilus rutilus), bream (Abramis brama), pikeperch (Sander lucioperca)

Abstract Florida largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides floridanus, fail to spawn in association with dense populations of stunted sunfish. A recent study indicated that a “physical factor” rather than a chemical factor may be responsible. Three hatchery ponds containing marked bass were stocked at different points in the bass reproductive cycle with ...

Abstract The behaviour of Norwegian spring spawning herring (Clupea harengus L.) was studied in a spawning ground off Kanney in southwestern Norway. A total of 47 schools were tracked from 5 to 60 minutes using multi-beam sonar and echosounder. Variables recorded included the horizontal area and vertical extent, depth, density and structure of schools ...
