Finite axiomatizability for profinite groups

open access: yesProceedings of the London Mathematical Society, Volume 123, Issue 6, Page 597-635, December 2021., 2021
Abstract A group is finitely axiomatizable (FA) in a class C if it can be determined up to isomorphism within C by a sentence in the first‐order language of group theory. We show that profinite groups of various kinds are FA in the class of profinite groups, or in the class of pro‐p groups for some prime p.

Fusion systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This is a survey article on the theory of fusion systems, a relatively new area of mathematics with connections to local finite group theory, algebraic topology, and modular representation theory.

Cohomology of Finite Groups: Interactions and Applications (hybrid meeting) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The cohomology of finite groups is an important tool in many subjects including representation theory and algebraic topology. This meeting was the fifth in a series that has emphasized the interactions of group cohomology with other areas. In spite of

Compact groups in which all elements are almost right Engel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
We say that an element g of a group G is almost right Engel if there is a finite set R(g) such that for every x∈G all sufficiently long commutators [...[[g,x],x],…,x] belong to R(g), that is, for every x∈G there is a positive integer n(x,g) such that [...

The effect of homeownership on the option value of regional migration

open access: yesQuantitative Economics, Volume 10, Issue 4, Page 1453-1493, November 2019., 2019
This paper estimates a lifecycle model of consumption, housing choice, and migration in the presence of aggregate and regional shocks, using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). The model delivers structural estimates of moving costs by ownership status, age, and family size that complement the previous literature.

Reduced fusion systems over p-groups with abelian subgroup of index p: II [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Let p be an odd prime, and let S be a p-group with a unique elementary abelian subgroup A of index p. We classify the simple fusion systems over all such groups S in which A is essential.

Earthquake‐Induced Chains of Geologic Hazards: Patterns, Mechanisms, and Impacts

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 57, Issue 2, Page 421-503, June 2019., 2019
Abstract Large earthquakes initiate chains of surface processes that last much longer than the brief moments of strong shaking. Most moderate‐ and large‐magnitude earthquakes trigger landslides, ranging from small failures in the soil cover to massive, devastating rock avalanches. Some landslides dam rivers and impound lakes, which can collapse days to

Almost Engel compact groups [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We say that a group G is almost Engel if for every g∈G there is a finite set E(g) such that for every x∈G all sufficiently long commutators [...[[x,g],g],…,g] belong to E(g), that is, for every x∈G there is a positive integer n(x,g) such that [...[[x,g]
